Prep placed 7th out of 8 teams at today's Academic Decathalon at Clarion University, just of few points shy of Northwestern. Really?

Prep had their asses handed to them by 7 public schools with Collegiate Academy coming in 2nd place.

Why did Prep place so poorly? I thought that they would have taken 1st place by a significant margin.

I think that Fr Jabo needs to say more prayers to Mary, Queen of Prep.

Can not wait to hear how they spin it when their latest super star football player is not eligible for Michigan St. Should be great to watch them try and make people believe they don't use kids for sports. A great prep school that can't even get kids to qualify for college. Well done men of prep.

Cathedral Prep is a shell of its former self.If you've got the money you're in.Their guidance office is a joke.Fewer kids go to the better colleges than before with more being funneled toward Gannon,Prep's big brother. As tuition climbs toward $8000 how desparate will they get to admit whoever shows up with the cash?Save your money and apply it toward the next 4 years. That "Men of Prep" thing doesn't have the luster it once did.

Yeah ....Cathedral Prep is a shell of the education institution it once was. When I graduated from Erie Tech, Prep was the only school which exceeded the percentage of graduates who went on to college Tech generated.
Yes, Erie Tech had the highest percentage of Grads go on to college of all public city schools back in the day but was a distant second to Cathedral Prep.
I may not like the attention Prep received down thru the years to the detriment of city public schools but they had the record to back it up be it academically or in sports.
As the years passed & the Parochial school system declined drastically in enrollment Prep lost their farm system for the better students & athletes, they had to resort to drafting from the public school system.
Its a mixed bag I guess but Prep is indeed down from their once lofty perch & Collegiate Academy is top dog academically but Prep is still tops in sports.......That unfortunately is where the attention is for the general public....shame, shame, shame.

Good points. It's surprising that more people don't discuss why parochial grade school numbers are down. This fact results in a domino effect on the quality of student available to Prep compared to years ago. The most obvious reason is the cost.Parochial grade schools are about $3000 now and many families, especially in Erie and it's economy cannot afford this price tag any longer.Consider that many families have more than one child to send to these schools and the financial burden becomes unthinkable.Years ago so many more kids would go to these schools when tuition was much lower and subsidized by the parish and/or diocese.Today they are likely to attend the public schools as a way to better manage the family budget. When parents recover from the sticker shock upon learning of Prep's tuition, approaching $8000 per year, they decide to keep their sons in the public school system.
While Prep still manages to keep their classrooms reasonably full they no longer get as many parochial grade school kids that once assured higher academic achievment.Since tuitions for Catholic schools will only continue to rise it's very doubtful this trend will ever be reversed. This will surely lead to further watering down the quality of incoming Prep students and it's graduates.

It seems like a lot of people hate Prep, but don't they save the tax payers about $10,000/year for each student that doesn't go to a public schools? I don't see Prep asking for $93 mm for a new school. If you don't send your Kids to Prep why are you complaining?

Yeah, those tuition costs are ridiculous. Those bingo game and "casino night" revenues just aren't what they used to be.

As a city we should see what we can do for them. Letting them suck up all that tax-exempt downtown property while the rest of us shoulder the real estate taxes apparently isn't quite enough.

Maybe we should let them build a tax-exempt stadium on 12th street. To drum up more interest in attending Prep maybe we should then let them violate all existing noise ordinances and use a PA system for their football games that can be heard at Frontier park. Oh wait, we've already done that....., there's got to be something else we can do for them other than the 100's of millions we've already sent to the Vatican through them.

So you are complaining that a private school is on tax exempt property but nor public schools? If Prep has 600 students it is saving the PA tax payer about $6,000,000/year. Isn't the stadium next to a train track and in a industrial section. I don't suspect noise is an issue. I didn't see anyone else stepping up to develop the property. I suspect Prep doesn't have extra money to send to the Vatican.

Fair enough. Good questions (although apparently you have not heard their PA system 3 miles away as have thousands of us). Just one single question. Where do you think the Vatican does get their billions upon billions upon billions? We both know they have it. I ask one single question. Where does it come from?

While I am not an accountant for the Vatican, my guess it comes from the Catholic congregations around the world. Most churches are having financial issues so I suspect less is going to the Vatican. If you have an issue with it don't give. What about the PA system for the Stadium or McDowell, they are in a residential areas.
