Union leader calls for ouster of Erie County public safety director

The president of Erie County government's largest union is calling for Public Safety Director Joseph Weindorf's resignation.

The call comes in the wake of Weindorf's decision to launch a time-off plan for public safety managers in violation of county personnel rules.

That plan, county officials confirmed Thursday, could result in more than $28,000 in taxpayer-funded payouts to the affected employees. The managers accumulated 1,515 hours worth of compensatory time that was not authorized by County Executive Mark DiVecchio's administration.

Karen Dorich, president of Local 2666 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, called for Weindorf to step down in an e-mail she sent to DiVecchio this morning.

The union represents about 350 county workers, including dispatchers and call-takers at the county-run public-safety complex in Summit Township.

"The rules that are in place with the county are for everyone to follow," Dorich said. "And this is such an egregious act that it's probably going to cost the county money.''

DiVecchio said today that he is considering disciplinary action against Weindorf, who told the Times-News that he intends to stay on the job but will accept any discipline that might be handed down.

Why does the county executive need to fix it...he did not create it. Talk to your county council. What are accusing with your comment on the RICO lunch meetings, do you have proof?

Erie 8, are you a moroon Joe was Divecchio's pick for christ sake the rest of council can't help it they are idiots to.

as far as the RICO comment, guess there was enough to write a story on, wake up this isn't Disney land.

So if we don't need the County Executive why have one, again wake up your dreaming or maybe the county exce should be a meter maid position with no repsonsibility.

We'll need more information:

Were any of these violations of the public trust committed 'in the presence of' a County Sheriff's Deputy?

If so, was the Deputy observed arresting the miscreant?

If not, was the Deputy observed to be winking, nodding, or high-five-ing the perps?

Joe Weindorf fathered this 911 call center and he reassured everyone it as ready to go. Now he has gone beyond the County guidelines in a sneaky and unscrupulous fashion. He has made a mess of everything. It is time for him to resign.

Why would DiVecchio fire Weindorf? I mean look what DiVecchio has been able to get away with while he has been in office...why would you think that any of his cronies would be held accountable? Our only hope is for January 2010 and let's hope that our next County Executive, whoever that may be, will go in and "Clean House" but then again, this is Erie County where those in office get away with breaking the rules and still get paid by the taxpayer's. Yes, Weindorf and gang are being PAID with our hard earned taxdollars......only in Erie County can you screw up over and over again and continued to get paid.

Just another example of why I should not vote for any of these idiots. If this was done by someone lower in the food chain, they would have been fired on the spot. But it was Joe Wiendorf, and he knows all, well like Killer said...Fire his Ass and send him packing. He has cost this county enough money and letting him resign is to good for him.

Thinking about starting a "petition" to have the powers on the "Hill" removed...anyone interested in signing it and then have it presented to the County Executive?

Weindorf, Grappy, Smith and Robinson...all useless managers who have no business being in the positions they hold. They might make good janitors...but that's all.

As for Mark "pizza boy D....he won't do anything. He is a lame duck County Exec. He is worthless...you folks elected him...you got what you asked for.

Glad I left Erie before the ship sunk. Will the last person leaving Erie please turn out the lights...and forward all 911 calls to someone who cares.

Hey Paul, if you're so glad to be out of Erie PA, why do you spend so much time trolling Topix and other blogs stirring up trouble up here ? Don't you have anything better to do down south in the promised land ?
Plenty of people care, and they're doing the best they can.
Why don't you tell us how you would run things ? Better yet, come on back and do it.

Karen Dorich doesn't have a lot of power in the AFSCME Union. She thinks she does but he "brothers and sisters" hate her. She is more or less on the administrative side since they've given her a parking spot and a nice plush office. Her and Zollie make decisions for the Union that are not favorable...so I don't think that Divecchio is going to listen to her or Zollie. Maybe Meredith will becomes he's as dumb as a box of rocks (and by the way, has anyone seen him and Kiss-azz Wiley around much since Divecchio got beat buy a 64 year-old senior citizen? Could be an interesting 2010...hmmm?

Everytime I've been at the courthouse and seen Larry he never seems to be doing much work.

He's either standing in the hall BS-ing with someone or walking around eating a piece of candy.

Yet this piece of crap got a big raise from Mark D.

For what?

Weindorf is not going anywhere. He's too much a part of the network. He's too connected and too much of a political kiss-butt.

People like that don't have to face the consequences of their screw-ups. They just keep getting awarded continued government job security and pay raises. That's the nature of the game.

Anyone who thinks Weindorf will be fired is one naive idiot.

Weindork is safe...at least for now. Divecchio won't do anything about it. He only has 5 months left. Do you really think he gives a crap about Erie County...NOT!

Yes just look at the mess Joe Weindorf made of the 911 Center putting everyones lives at rish and now his newest fiasco that is going to cost of lots more tax payer monies. Joe Weindorf should have to pay all these people back out of his own pocket and be fired.

I wonder why Weindorf left the job as District Justice in the 4th ward. What a cushy job that was. He must have owed Robie a favor when they were cops together and stepped down...everything he's touched since then has turned to feces.
