ENOUGH WITH THE SOCIAL SERVICE EXPANSION IN ERIE!!

Put those damn shelters next door to Rick Crocker's $400,000 mansion in Millcreek. How bout that you phony piece of crap.

The city has enough social service do gooders who don't pay property taxes. The city is tired of importing the region's poor and mentally ill. Halfway houses, drug treatment centers, teenage criminal barracks in decent neighborhoods....ad nauseum.

Put it in Summit or Harborcreek or Millcreek not in a residential neighborhood.

The last thing any community needs or wants is a homeless shelter of any kind. "If you build it they will come" is always the inevitable outcome. Carlisle, PA is a good example of this. Nice town but the bleeding hearts put in a third homeless shelter just a few years ago and now suddenly Carlisle has a severe homeless crisis with dozens of scumbags all over the borough holding up cardboard signs asking for handouts. A homeless shelter will destroy any community, don't let it happen.

Non profits often pay in lieu of property tax. The local governments act as if this "in lieu of tax" payment is an entitlement that the government has due to them.

Why would Millcreek or Harborcreek want or need a homeless shelter. Is there a problem in Millcreek or Harborcreek? Does the Salvation Army own property in either districts or do they own it in Erie?

I'd agree that there are some fairly useless non-profits out there, but Erie does seem very willing to accept them with open arms in anticipation of their "hand out" from the non-profits come tax time. So, I'd say that "the city" is definitely not "sick and tired of importing the region's poor and mentally ill".

Try not paying your property taxes and offering them less "In lieu of tax". See how long it is before the law comes after you. Non profits should get the same treatment as anyone else who has donated even $1.00 to charity. Non profits are just a bigger parasite that feeds off the smaller parasite community.

Just to clear one thing up......

The city imports these people to keep the head count over 100k so they can continue to get their grant money for whatever project from the state and federal government.

Sad, but true.
In the mean time, they expect non profit and tax payer alike to take care of these people.
The city wants them, as long as they're out of sight.

Isn't there any empty buildings on State st. to house these people?

The city needs to be reminded everyday this is their responsibility too.

Why not address the problem of homeless kids at the source ??

Give people who should not have kids, and can't afford to raise them BIRTH CONTROL .....

And don't give financial bonuses for their mistakes.

This is just plain silly. I own a home and am subject to property tax. I own a for profit business and am subject to paying sales tax, as well as tax on profits. Thus, if I choose not to pay these taxes - I deserve to be "bullied" into paying up.

A non-profit does is not subject to these taxes BY LAW. Why should they pay anything "in lieu"? To me, "doing the right thing" would be in not paying anything "in lieu" because they do not need to.

Do you purposely pay "Extra" tax? I know I don't. Why should they?

Is Gannon non profit?

How does Gannon help with the homeless?

Do they expect a fire to be put out by our fire department?

Do they also expect the police to show up when a crime is committed?

Are you also against the Veterans Hospital and Soldiers & Sailor's home?

Gannon betters the community by providing higher education so that their students are able to obtain jobs of higher status than that of Dollar General cashier, Wal Mart Associate, McDonalds Drive Thru attendant, or plastic factory laborer.

Really, they need not any justification, as they are a legally recognized not for profit and tax exempt entity.

What's interesting is that Johnstown-Cambria County is probably the poorest area of Pennsylvania yet they don't have one homeless shelter in the entire County right now. In fact they don't even have a homeless problem despite the fact that they have a severe poverty issue.

A. these are government facilities

b. Higher education at quite a high price. At the rate Gannon is expanding, gobbling up real estate with no tax tag on it, I'd say they're not hurting a bit. Those students aren't going to stick around Erie and ply their trade. They need a job that pays enough so they can start paying off their thousands and thousands of student loan debt.
Just because something is considered legal ,doesn't make it OK.

Guilt-ridden-whiney-assed-bed wetters

Politically Liberal,

a guilt-ridden-whiney-assed-bed wetter is often beyond liberal and nearly to the point of irrationality.

Typically the guilt-ridden-whiney-assed-bed wetter believes that a free ride can be provided to everyone,

regardless of their motivation to work,

create,

innovate or to even wipe their own ass without help from the government.

Usually these guilt-ridden-whiney-assed-bed wetters love to

"Help the poor"

but always using resources obtained from others.

Statistically proven to give less of their own income to charity than the average conservatives.

Often white,

often college educated and usually feels a misplaced sense of guilt at their own existence.

Normally dislikes the United States or any other place/people associated with freedom of thought, free markets or that horrid capitalistic system established in the Western World.
