Rumor has it that McDowell Boys Varsity Basketball coach was told to either resign or be fired yesterday. Bad move on McDowell's part. He seemed to be taking the program in a good direction without much talent and seemed very committed to the students. He must have somehow peed in the wrong person's canteen.

Not necessarily taking the program in a good direction. McDowell had a very good (talent-wise, ball-handling, height, coordination, athleticism) team back in 2010 ( i believe) and they bowed out in the first round of the playoffs. If it was 2010, could have been 2009, at any rate, it was considered one of the best group of kids in a very, very long time... and it was supposed to be a promising year... the work ethic just wasn't (ans still isn't) there. Practices were (are) laid back, shoot-a-rounds, like playing cherry or horse. Some kids were out on the floor practicing while others were "stretching out" on the floor. By stretching out, I mean lying down flat on their backs for 10-15 minutes just talking. The mentality was "were good, we know it, we've been playing together forever, so let's just throw the ball around a bit and shoot a few times while we talk about whether to go to Cici's or Eat n park later. Even with MP and CP stealing kids from the district, McD still has had such a huge student body to work with. imo, the coach does not get these kids to reach their full potential. He just doesn't prepare McD kids to play like other coaches do, GM's for example.

Should clean house. Fire the athletic administration and hire coaches who want to win and are allowed to run their programs without influence from administration. Shame for the kids. It will not happen... POLITICS RULE AT MCDOWELL...ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL. That is why their students with talent go to Prep and Mercyhurst.

No coach can compel suburban kids who have been pampered all their lives to suddenly become competitive demons on the athletic field. The parents created them but seek to blame the coach for their failures.

NO NO NO nothing to do with the kids. Suburban schools around here (General McLane and others) win. Also, wealthy schools from around the state win all the time. It is not the kids. It is the Athletic administration, coaches and parents. All easily fixed. It is a shame these people steal
tax payers money and are allowed to put mediocre teams on the courts and fields. If this attitude exists in Athletics I am sure it has seeped into Academics. Sad situation.

What a clueless, racist rube. Many suburban schools win stupid. How the hell do you explain the athletic failures at East and Central??

Coach Hetz has the right approach, but don't take my word for it. Read the article written in 2007 in the Altoona Mirror at http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/content.det...

Coach Hetz has had great success in the past, and is a mature, level headed coach who treats his players and others with respect. I'm not sure why he was let go, but he clearly has the ablity to coach well and has proven it. I hope McDowell can find a worthy replacement.

He can have the right approach all he wants. If he cant win games, and cant get kids to compete for him then he is USELESS!!! Letting your players do whatever they feel like is not treating them with respect. Hetz uses the buddy-buddy approach with his athletes, and it shows on the scoreboard.

isn't playing the game about more than just winning? I thought sports at the high school level was about team and opportunities to play. Not everyone goes on to play in college or to semi-pros etc. Do you know anything about him and his coaching or just what you have heard?

I have only been to a few McDowell games this year, so I don't know much of what happened with the team. I have only heard the opinions of different people, but I don't often put much stick in opinions, especially when athletics are involved. But what politics were involved in this decision, and how did they bring about Coach Hetz's leaving?

A 295-182 record demonstrates a clear winning record. He obviously must have gained the respect and desire to win from his players in the Altoona area, and he obviously won. The last time I checked, the players are the ones who actually score, play defense, etc. A coach can only do so much with the talent he is given. Erie is not generally known as a hotbed of basketball talent. People should be more open minded, keep a perspective on high school sports, and realize that the greater lessons taught by a high school coach have little to do with the score at the end of the game.

Don't let the overall win / loss record fool you. Many games are played againse local, overmatched teams (even though AAAA McDowell lost to AA Girard this year). It came down to two issues - failure to advance in the state playoffs and losing to Prep.

Dude you mean with all those millcreek boys you cant find 15 kids that can ball. Then you should step down. Tell them parents to fuck off if they get to involved. Close practices off. And run them kids like a military. We are to soft on these kids today. Gotta start kicking some ass. Plus you get your team.and you play all year round in tournaments and leagues. Thats how you get better. ..basketball never stops

lots of misinformation here. first off Kraig is a good guy who has alot of basketball knowledge and passion for the game. where i believe he got into trouble is his inflexibility of his system and unwillingness to adjust it, as well as how he treated players. As a coach you should always be able to adjust especially when you know the competition is going to do it to you (ie Prep for instance). When you are too one dimensional you make it way too easy for the other teams to gameplan you. He's had alot of talent at McDowell in the past, and he has alot of young talent now. But when you can't even field a whole team because kids don't want to try out and go through a season with him coaching then that should tell you something right there. I appreciated his intensity but when he's constantly riding his players in front of the fans it gets old after a while. Especially when you look across the court at the opposition and the other coach is cheering his kids to shoot more and be the athletes they are while he seems to be reeling them in with 5 passes before you even think about shooting. Sometimes you just need to let the kids play.

I agree. I know both Coach and his wife. I think they are a wonderful family. I was just curious as to what politics came in to play?
