I have a suggestion for everyone in Erick regarding Harley and Annabelle. Instead of all this childish name-calling and bickering about them, get to know them and make an effort to incorporate them into the community more. All of this resentment and hatred is extremely petty and do no one any good. If they feel welcome in their hometown and are respected then they will feel obligated to return the kindness. I'm pretty sure that many towns would be PROUD to have such a popular tourist destination and would work with them, not against them! As their popularity grows (and it will) so will the opportunities for local businesses. A good relationship with them could be mutually beneficial, symbiosis. Go talk to them…find out who and what they are all about for yourself…ignore gossip and unfounded rumors about them and just ASK THEM! If you ask something from them, have something to offer in return. With the opening of the "Cars" theme park your town will most likely see an increase in tourism and international interest, which you could use to the town's advantage! Yes they may seem weird, crude and strange to some, but that is all A SHOW, the REASON people come to see them, P.T. Barnum would be envious!
For H & A, I would strongly urge you to become more active in your community, help out your neighbor and it will eventually be returned. The Sandhills curio shop is an incredible asset to the town, but you must be part of the town and accept more responsibility for your community. If your neighbors see you helping the community they will be less likely to slander you. Get involved with the local chamber of commerce, attend city council meetings! Even if you strongly dislike the people who are a part of it at least you can defend yourself in person and have your say on the matter. In short, GET INVOLVED to make Erick a better place for everyone. I know that what you do is extremely energetic and tiring…but make the effort and you will be very glad you did.
H & A are doing well, and even in these tough economic times they continue to do well. Maybe some of the local business people should ask them how they operate, maybe they could learn something from each other. Being one of the attractions of Historic route 66, drawing over 10,000 foreign tourists yearly to spend their money. Due to the dollar being so weak against many foreign currencies, the tourists are more apt to spend money here, as they get a good value for their money. They bring billions of dollars to the U.S.A. en mass, and spend, spend, spend. It's very similar to U.S. Citizens traveling to Mexico for a "Cheap" vacation.

As for myself, I am a professional motorcycle tour guide, leading 5-8 tours down Historic Route 66 yearly. I always stop at H & A's with my groups to see their unique brand of entertainment. They are a bit crude and "over-the-top" at times, but that's what makes them so appealing. I have known them for 6 years now and I respect them. I am well aware of the difficulties they have encountered from some of the locals, and how BOTH sides have dealt with it, sometimes poorly. I would like to remain neutral and be the voice of reason, from an outsiders perspective. The city of Erick has a great asset in them, and I think they are fools not to embrace them.
Other than the Grand Canyon it is the most enjoyable and talked about experiences for my group participants. Many of them know about them BEFORE they come over here, and ask about them. They are entertainers, and damn good ones! I also like to think of them as friends, and they have made an effort to endorse me as well. I will continue to come into town with tour groups, and if the town had a better resturant and gas station I would make it a point to have lunch and fuel up the motorcycles there instead of Shamrock (where we currently fuel up and eat). I'm just ONE tour guide, there are dozens of us coming through Erick annualy, take advantage of us coming through town. I was raised in Estes Park, Colorado…a tourist town, and I know firsthand how beneficial the tourism industry can be to a small local economy. The town could prosper creating good-paying jobs and small business opportunities if everyone works together!
Good luck and I'll see you in April with the next tour group.
Sincerely,
Gary "Bear" Fleshman

P.S. Yes, I'm putting my real name here, as I am not afraid to speak my mind and utilize my first ammendment rights. If you have a problem with what I have said them please have the courage to respond with intelligent reasonable discourse, I will just IGNORE the petty slander and bullshit this forum is filled with. Make a good point and I may agree with you, like I said, I want to remain neutral and open-minded.
I sincerely hope everyone in town wakes up, stops all this childish, idiotic, petty bickering and works together to make Erick a great place to visit!

Sadly, missing synergistic opportunities over winning the big contest seems to be part of what Erick leadership has been all about for a long long time. No doubt there are a lot of possibilities for improvement but no matter how much grant money or other new business incentives are provided, it really all comes down to a tremendous amount of personal initiative, drive, and perseverance. Harley and Annabelle have demonstrated the level of personal initiative, drive, and perseverance it takes to make it happen and should not be faulted for it at all. Being an independent businessman, I'm sure you understand that very well, mtnphotoman.

All sounds like good advice but I hate to tell you but Harley has no intention of trying to get along. The RMM offered an olive branch when it was being opened and he just broke it and threw it back in their faces. The people running the RMM would have liked to work along side the SHCS they could have helped each other out by sending tourists to each other and giving people more to see in Erick. I don't think Harley is a team player so I don't see them ever getting along.

This sodomite social bigot thinks he knows the truth and thinks he speaks for others but he doesn't. Not by a long shot.

I'm pretty sure the majority of Erick agrees with me. I bet you couldn't find fifty people in this town who still support the SHCS and it's all because of you Harley. You know in all the years you have been here I have never seen you at one sporting event or ever at any event at the auditorium. To be honest I have never seen you do one thing with anyone but annebelle in town since you have moved here. I had no problem with you two being loners and keeping to yourselves till you got on here and started your crap. I still remember the post you wrote where you talked about being accused of asking fir tax money so if that is not an admission to being Harley then I don't know what is. Then going back and deleting it just made you look more guilty.

That is a flat-out lie. That never happened. They tried to convince everybody who came to Erick that the Russells were nutcases. And pretty much succeeded, for awhile.

Has anyone taken into consideration the fact that there were other people working at the RMM those first few years? Paula has only been working there a couple of years or so....I don't know whether any of the Board Members have changed.

Whatever at the beginning the RMM asked Harley to be a part of the festival and he told them where to go. Harley drew first blood.

So I see it continues, childish and petty bickering. I think it's about time that EVERYONE forgets about the past and looks to the future instead. What happened, happened, there's nothing that can change that now. This atavistic behavior is pointless, forget about what happened in the past, and start working on a better tomorrow for everyone. I have had bad things said about me by a couple of tour participants in the past, but it's just that the past. I chalk it up to someone's opinion and forget about it. If I am doing things correctly and make a honest effort then I have nothing to worry about! I listen to my detractors and try to empathize with them and LEARN from them, not call them names and waste time with that garbage. After I have learned as much as I can about them and their opinion I forget about them and MOVE ON with my life!
That's how I deal with it.

Think about this: "
Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured." Samuel Langhorn Clemens A.K.A. Mark Twain

So stop the bickering and move onward!

Or just laugh about it all!
Will a day come when the race will detect the funniness of these juvenilities and laugh at them--and by laughing at them destroy them? For your race, in its poverty, has unquestionably one really effective weapon--laughter. Power, Money, Persuasion, Supplication, Persecution--these can lift at a colossal humbug,--push it a little-- crowd it a little--weaken it a little, century by century: but only Laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of Laughter nothing can stand.

mtnphotoman, You've met Harley (the actor) as a tourist, correct? Well, with all due respect, you don't have a clue. Posts like yours just compound the problem by glorifying him and disrespecting the locals. These people have lived around the real Harley for a couple of decades, what makes you think you know more than they do?

I Don't, but I do see a lot of grown adults acting like children. I'm not glorifying anyone. The past is just that, the past. I have nothing but respect for EVERYONE, until they prove to me otherwise. I am only offering my OPINION on what I see going on there from ALL sides. From what I have seen so far it is my opinion that EVERYONE needs so just get on with their lives and put all this resentment and animosity behind them and just get on with their lives. The longer this goes on the more it will damage EVERYONE.
