Do you agree or disagree with the police jury's plan to remove the five fishing piers along La. 82 between Forked Island and Pecan Island?

Why not. Gives the people without boats a place to catch some food.

I was kind of saddened at the thought of them removed for good, all the memories of when I was a kid to stop along the way to Holly Beach with the Family to throw a line. My dad always would stop, and take pictures of the wildlife and family for memories. It's kind of a landmark! They would need to definately install permanent trash can holders, & why not try to maintain them? Some people have No where to fish, they will still go there and just throw the trash on the ground if no trash cans r put, so why not rebuild? I think it would make the scenic byway a lot more attractive! But must have permanent trash cans!

The real shame is the parish does not pick up the trash. Why have garbage cans if they are always overflowing? Why have these places when the Parish can't be bothered taking care of them?

Structures and places such as the piers are a much needed " value added" item in today's society. Am I understanding you correctly? Are you saying presently there are no trashcans at the piers? What kind of governing entity maintains a public facility with no trash cans?

There seems to be little consideration nowadays for traditions. lets take Delcambre for instance. 25 years ago, going fish in Delcambre was a cheap family event. You could fish near the bridge, you could fish near the boat ramp. People traveled from all around to fish in Delcambre. Its the only place that I know of , that you can catch such a variety of fish from the bank.
But now there is no public fishing allowed from the bank anywhere in that town. I once read a story about Delcambres plan to have "riverwalk" type developement, with restaurants, gift shops, bars, cofffee shops etc. I had to giggle. A multi-million dollar developement. I wrote a note to the man proposing this idea, I said How about a basic public fishing area to start off, I know it will be 20 years before yall find the money for the big plan.

Delcambre doesn't have much of anything to attract visitors

Maybe, just maybe...the threat of closing the piers will stop those trashy SOB's that use them as dumping grounds. I drive by these piers often and it is almost laughable at how nasty they get because people are leaving their litter all over the place, and some are even hauling old furniture and old tires to be left at these piers.

They need to install some of them ARkansas signs that read....

"Leave only footprints, Take only memories and pictures or something like that."

We are obviously dealing with some type of unevolved peeps that don't even realize how to dispose of their own personal trash properly.

And yep, I still believe in an eye for an eye. 100% death penalty for all convicted murderers.

I don't want to throw this thing off but your last paragraph would make an excellent poll/discussion for another thread.

On a lighter more peacful note. I think they should rebuild the 3 piers with open sides, green metallic rooves, and benches along the back. Sort of like the ones out at Lake Fausse Point.

Maybe a better atmosphere would prompt the bottom barrelers to pick up their trash and or stop hauling it there for personal dumping.

Can you all believe that there are still some locals who think it's perfectly fine to just throw their mcdonald's trash etc. out their vehicles while traveling. These are the exact types that trash these piers. Nothing that a few of those motion sensor deer cameras on 20ft utility poles couldn't stop. Oh, and the Arkansas signs, can't forget those mind changing signs that force even the most ignorant to evolve into humans.

As bad as these unevolved peeps are Mr. Monkey, there's no excuse for parish not to keep these places clean. Even in the boondocks a little more police presence can make for a lot less litter. I realize how hard it is to catch an appliance or tire dumper and ultimately the responsibility is a personal one, as you state.

All they need to do is enter Louisiana in the cleanest state contest and have our own topix troll TT as campaign chairman and everything will be cleaned up. Look at what he did for Abbeville. Wait Abbeville lost this year because of to much topix, well maybe Louisiana could maybe win but they would give the title to Texas.

I grew up in a time where we brought all of our trash to a dump site or burned our trash in a 55 gal drum. Also, as a pass time, we threw beer bottles at signs to try and break the bottles. If it could fit through the car or truck window, out it went

Now, if my kids even attempt to throw a gum wrapper out of the window, they pay in blood. LOL

It works if the Father sets the example. When my kids see litter on the road they take a breath of disgust. And they don't even have driving rights yet. You see, anyone can evolve. Given the right set of circumstances.

I agree with the green roofed covered areas, that would be Gorgous! Many like to take the scenic route for the purpose of maybe finding a good fishing spot sometimes elderly people do this over the weekend, I have an elderly friend who just traveled that way to Texas, and they both love to fish! These days their is almost nothing to do that is Free! Well, going to keep this topic in my prayers that they rebuild!

From what I understand, these piers were built in 1986 by the LA Office of State Parks and turned over to the police jury to maintain. If that is true, then it appears that the police jury has been negligent in their responsibility to maintain these piers.

Recently, someone complained to the police jury about all the trash in that area. Police Jury's response: let's close the piers as they are unsafe and would cost us too much money to repair.

That is an example of the backwards thinking that results in the lack of growth in this parish.

I hope there is a large turnout at the police jury meeting tonight at 6 pm to fight to save the piers.

LMAO, are you kidding?!! Some of the guys working and making the descisions for the police jury were the fathers that threw everything out the pick up truck windows bar none. Leave it to them to keep the piers kept up and maintained? Pahahaha. They see the piers as a gathering place for Negr@$.<< This is how they think. To them, the piers are not worth the money to maintain, because of the people who use them. Remember, we are only one state over from Mississippi friends. And only 2 states over from Alabama. At one time they were the 2 most racist states in the country.
Thanks for the info on the Office of State Parks kmsl. I did not know that.

Well, I think it would be sad on the jurors to not rebuild. Sure wish I could go to that meeting, but heck they would probably see MrsC. Coming and Lock me out! Lol lol

Went to the meeting tonite, and was able to get them to put off voting on closing them all together. Our company would be willing to "adopt-a-pier". Any other takers out there? I am hoping that Monkey will come lend a hand in building those piers and benches he is talking about along with helping pick up some of the trash that is out there.
The piers are structurally fine, they just need cosmetic makeovers and trash removal. I would be willing to put a camera of some sort up on mine to see what kind of lost soul would trash such a beautiful place.
There is so much the VPPJ can do without the help of the citizens. We come together for hurricanes and any other crisis that comes our way, why cant we do
this for the piers? The Jurors used to keep trash bins out there until they kept getting thrown in the canals, sad but true..
If we want to keep our state beautiful, known as the "sportsman paradise" we need to do our part also. Clean it up, adopt a pier, take pride in our state, get the sheriff involved, more patrol, camera's etc.
