Does anyone know where to get some live crawfish besides Maxi Mart? I called there and apparently its separate businesses for live crawfish. The lady that answered the phone at the store was so RUDE! How hard is it to give me the number...I always believed they were affiliated. Sorry! I'd rather take my business elsewhere...so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! I've only lived in this town for a few years and I am still not too familiar.

And don't forget, when you buy crawfish, ask them to put it on the scale. These seafood dealers are shady people.

Yeah. bait sized. Twenty years ago, people didn't even have the nerve to sell baby bait crawfish. People would not even buy tiny "ant sized" crawfish twenty years ago.

here is the problem you have. The seafood outlets won't sell good sized live crawfish. They keep them for themselves to sell cooked. So people like you and i who want to boil our own can't even buy nice sized crawfish. But I have news for you. I get nice size crawfish when I plan to boil. I go down to the boatlanding in Charenton and get prime crawfish off the boat. Or I'll head to Kaplan and catch them coming out the pond.

You're exactly right about the boiling scenario.
Also, the best product has been going to neighborIng states where a price premium is gauranteed.
The money is " on the road ".
Sometimes they just run small, no matter if they're pond or basin.

Not too long ago buyers worked on 15cents/lb profit for local sales or about six dollars(40/lb/avg) a sack. Road sales were about 25 cents depending on the distance.
These days 30cents/lb is the going rate for LOCAL sales or about $12 a sack.

Your best bet is to always buy out of the boat. Don't blame the fishermen for the high prices. Bait and fuel costs are astronomical compared to just a few years ago.

Here's how it plays out.
The fisherman recieves 50cents/lb.
Dealer gets his 30cents/lb.
Retailer gets his 20-25cents/lb.

You get um for the bargain price of 99cents/lb.If you're lucky.
... Double what the fisherman gets....

The pond boys here are still getting over three dollars a pound or about $120 a sack.
... Eat ribeyes. They're cheaper...

Prices too high and crawfish too small. Don't buy or eat the mother f'ckers. If everybody did that, after a month, the prices would go back down to reasonable. But you always have the people who refuse to do without. The I, Me, My types.

You are right on the mark with your opinion. years ago, we just accepted that crawfish eating season didn't begin until the end of February. But for some reason, you have some fools that are willing to pay top dollar for the lowest size quality crawfish.

One other secret for getting the markets to sell you the big crawfish, is to boil them at 3:00 p.m. sunday afternoon. by that time, the crawfish orders for the weekend have slowed, and if they have not boiled all their large crawfish, they will begin selling them.

Consumer hint number three. Always have them put the sack on a scale. Someone mentioned that idea on topix a couple years ago. So the next few times I picked up a sack of live crawfish, I asked them to put it on the scale. When I purchased Live crawfish at T-Bobs, I always got the amount written on the tag. Or at least within one pound. When I purchased them at that place in Abbeville, It was always 3 to 4 pounds shy. I no longer buy them there. They would always argue with me that the crawfish lost water after they arrived at their shop. If so, how come T-Bobs crawfish don't lose water. Not ever. Its because T-Bobs does not cheat its customers.
