I'm tired of my kids coming home telling me horror stories of the prison food They are serving our kids in school.......I tried packing their lunch and it's way expensive. And why does the high school not have a salad bar???

They serve the same food at every public school. Don't coddle those brats, make them work if they want better food.

It would take away from the sports programs if they had to maintain a salad bar every day. What kind of American are you anyway?

The kids have "choices" at the high school,I have been there and the food is well prepared and tastes good and is healthy,If your child dont like it then maybe they should choose another item,And unless you are on the free lunch program it would be cheaper to pack a lunch, sandwich, chips and drink averages out to less than 2 bucks a day,and if you are on free lunch then chances are you get food stamps and there will be no out of pocket expenses(cash).. I think your kid is playing you,go by the lunch room and check it out for your self,I am sure YOUR kid is not the only one in the high school eating there and unless your kid is expecting fine dining at its best then the food in the school is good and with nice selections, unless the kid is a spoiled pampered child and if so then thats your propblem... The school is NOT going to change its lunch program for YOUR child....But like I said GO CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF....I have had lunch there with my child and was not disappointed....

Tessa- don't you remember back when you were in school? Seems to me that all the kids in my school were forever complaining about the food. Yet even so, I can remember some great food items there that everyone liked...

For instance the home made vegetable soup on cold winter days often served with peanut butter and jelly {or was it honey} sandwich. Oh, and the yeast rolls and cinnamon buns that were served were mouthwatering. Even so, many things kids just didn't much care for such as jello with "stuff" in it and green beans. Kids will just always be kids when it comes to school meals and their likes/dislikes.

When you raise your kids on MacDonald's and Zaxby's and chips and microwave hot dogs, then they have a hard time actually understanding what a really good healthy meal is. And if you believe what they are telling you then your kids are the king of the house not you.

I admit some of the food is not-so-pleasant, but for every bad meal, there's quite a few good meals.

I think it is pretty amazing they pull together what halfway nutritious food they do as it is a budget of like 40 cents per child since there are many free/reduced lunches. What is truly disgusting is the waste. Kids throwing out unopened milk and fresh fruit w/o one bite in it!!!

Not everybody enjoys eating the same things. Just because it's on their plates doesn't mean they should be forced to eat it. Also, I'm glad they served something besides milk when I was in school. Drinking milk with meals is disgusting, and I don't blame any kid for throwing it out.

If ya don't like what's on the plate, you can leave hungry. That's what my mom always said. I survived and did rather well thank you.

That is all it is... my God they eat the same foods at home, hamburgers, hotdogs, chicke n nuggets, chicken strips, pizza, fries, tater tots, green beans, mac n cheese, and SALAD and then they have the sandwich section, ham n cheese,pb&j,turkey and bologna... What is wrong with this kind of food???????NOT A DAMN THING!!!!!!!!!. If you believe what your kid is telling you and the food is not fit to eat, then YOU NEED TO GO TO THE SCHOOL AND CHECK IT OUT....Your kids is telling you a.........."lie"

It may come as a shock to you, but when you scream and rant after quoting one person and never make any indication that you're talking to more than one said person, it looks just like you're talking to (screaming incoherently at) the person you quoted.

If healthy foods were offered at school, would most kids eat them? Eating habits are learned at home. At the grocery stores, look what foods have the widest selections. One entire frozen food aisle is dedicated to pizza and french fries. People are buying mostly high fat and sugar content foods like ground meat/sausage/french fries/cereal/little debbies/ pizza//ravioli/ cookies/juice/soda and other equally worthless stuff.

Check-out clerks cannot identify fresh vegetables or other unprocessed food.

Honestly, I think they might. The stuff served in school cafeterias is not garbage, but it's really not delicious. There's always one or two things that everyone loves (usually rolls and pizza), but the other stuff...ick. Granted, I know it's probably not feasible to make everything from scratch, but canned vegetables blow.

Fresh food takes more prep time. Laziness probably factors along with cost. Canned vegs have a very high salt content and less nutritional value. Frozen is next best to fresh. A cheap easy relatively heathly thing to fix would be fried rice with brown rice, frozen mix vegs, chicken with healthy oil and low salt soy. Do the free lunch kids stand in different lines than paying kids? That would suck for them. Kids with weight issues should be in different lines if anyone is to be humiliated.
