Good deal...while back I saw a pit bull only "dogshow" flyer in town...this was down by the gspot club and while it might have been intended to be a show more than likely dog fights were organized there

The Sheriff's dept. erred in saying the 3 dead dogs were a result of dog fighting. We examined them and they died from disease of some sort. One had a prolapsed uterus. But, regardless. I'm soooo happy that law enforcement is finally stepping up to enforce the laws regarding fighting, abuse, etc. And, that we have a D.A. who's willing to prosecute!

Judy, what causes this prolapsed uterus ?

Several factors can cause a prolapsed uterus. It's the same in animals as in women. Multiple childbirths, weakness in the pelvic muscles, constipation (continuous straining), coughing, etc. I'm not a vet., but looking at the age of this particular dog, I believe all but coughing could be eliminated. She may have had kennel cough, but this is speculation. You know when we have bronchitis or colds and continually cough, we're straining the muscles in our stomachs. I've seen cows with prolapsed uterus and it's usually caused by giving birth. You can probably find more information online. Hope this helped.

We're trying to get our ducks in a row to present it to Lee Harrell and the Police Jury when Lee takes over. He's very receptive to our needs and we believe he'll go to bat for us. In the meantime, we're going to try to get together with citizens who are willing to help us have an auction this spring in the hopes of getting a start on buying materials. I'm very excited about that. :-)

Casey received a call from the veterinarian who has the Pit Bulls today who stated she has order to euthanize them immediately. Casey is in Maryland on her way back to La., but can't be here before Wed. She asked the vet to wait and has contacted the D.A.'s office. Here is the law which specifies they must be put down. Note that it means the 10 day old puppy and mother as well.
102.6. Seizure and destruction or disposition of dogs and equipment used in dogfighting

A.(1) Any law enforcement officer making an arrest under R.S. 14:102.5 may lawfully take possession of all fighting dogs on the premises where the arrest is made or in the immediate possession or control of the person being arrested, whether or not the dogs are actually engaged in a fight at the time, and all paraphernalia, implements, equipment, or other property or things used or employed in violation of that Section.

(2) The legislature finds and declares that fighting dogs used or employed in violation of R.S. 14:102.5 are dangerous, vicious, and a threat to the health and safety of the public. Therefore, fighting dogs seized in accordance with this Section are declared to be contraband and, notwithstanding R.S. 14:102.1, the officer, an animal control officer, or a licensed veterinarian "may" cause them to be humanely euthanized as soon as possible by a licensed veterinarian or a qualified technician and shall not be civilly or criminally liable for so doing. Fighting dogs not destroyed immediately shall be disposed of in accordance with R.S. 14:102.2.

B.(1) The officer, after taking possession of any dogs other than those destroyed or disposed of pursuant to Subsection A and of the other paraphernalia, implements, equipment, or other property or things, shall file with the district court of the parish within which the alleged violation occurred an affidavit stating therein the name of the person charged, a description of the property so taken and the time and place of the taking thereof, together with the name of the person who claims to own such property, if known, and that the affiant has reason to believe and does believe, stating the ground of such belief, that the property so taken was used or employed in such violation.

(2) The seizing officer shall dispose of any dogs or other animals seized in the manner provided for in R.S. 14:102.2.

(3) He shall thereupon deliver the other property so taken to such court which shall, by order in writing, place such paraphernalia, implements, equipment, or other property in the custody of a suitable custodian, to be kept by such custodian until the conviction or final discharge of the accused, and shall send a copy of such order without delay to the district attorney of the parish. The custodian so named and designated in such order shall immediately thereupon assume the custody of such property and shall retain the same, subject to the order of the court before which the accused shall be required to appear for trial.

C. Any person claiming an interest in a seized animal may post a bond with the court in accordance with the provisions of R.S. 14:102.2(C) in order to prevent the disposition of such animal.

D. Upon conviction of the person so charged, all dogs so seized shall be adjudged by the court to be forfeited and the court shall order a humane disposition of the same in accordance with R.S. 14:102.2. The court may also in its discretion order the forfeiture of the bond posted, as well as payment of any reasonable or additional costs incurred in the boarding or veterinary treatment of any seized dog, as provided in R.S. 14:102.2. In the event of the acquittal or final discharge, without conviction, of the accused, the court shall, on demand, direct the delivery of the animals and other property so held in custody to the owner thereof and order the return of any bond posted pursuant to R.S. 14:102.2(C), less reasonable administrative costs.

I never said they fought them there, just that it was a good way to get dog fighting organized...the pit bull is an irish immigrants dog and also a breed of terrier...it's sad the stigma they come with now...I have one and he's the best bird dog I have, but then again I didn't chain him to tires or cut his ears off so he would look cool to my homeboys...he's just a dog that loyaly sleeps on a pillow beside my bed at nite...and no I don't live in rayville and never will...unless they annex me, but I'll fight that too...good day ;)

When you see two cats walking pit puppies through town, on HEAVY duty chains; does this not throw a red flag? Usually i walk my dogs on a regular leash. Hmmm...then again, I'm not raising my babies (dogs) to fight to their death. These people disgust me and I prefer we wipe them down with bacon and blood and let their own dogs rip them to shreds!

I raised a Pit Bull a long time ago and I swear he was the most gentle of dogs. Then again, I have had 5 German Shepherds (1 at a time) and our insurance company refused us Homeowners insurance because of it. We went to another one. While this sounds off topic, it isn't. Dogs that are maligned for bad behavior are: Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, Dobermans, German Shepherds and Chows. What's funny is the time I was politicking, had my back to a person's yard and a Chihuahua ran up the back of my leg and bit me. While it wasn't funny at the time, it's hilarious now. The above dogs were bred as service dogs. When trained, they are excellent dogs. When trained and fed improperly, taught to be aggressive and cruelly tied up with towing chains with cinder blocks on the end, they will become what their owner wants them to be. The Pit Bulls we rescued we're seeking human touch and compassion. They never attacked us.
I'd like to see everyone be vigilant of the signs of dog fighting. If you suspect it's going on, call us or the sheriff's dept. Don't try to be a hero. These people can be dangerous.
Thank you.
