Imagine if 6000 people were employed at this location now. It sure would help.

["...Brigman said he's not aware of any other environmental issues at the site, and he noted that he's impressed with Taylor & Murphy's efforts at salvaging materials..."]

The water there is more contaminated than at the CTS plant.

NOW HE HAS BEEN MADE AWARE.

So what is he planning on doing about it?

It's a terrible, industrial looking area. People that live in this vicinity will be happy when it's gone and replaced with something more attractive.

American Enka, a Dutch firm courted by Fred Seely who supervised construction of the Grove Park Inn, produced rayon, polyester and nylon at the site for decades, at its peak employing about 6,000 people. The company sold the plant in ......

I hate to break the news but not all of the plant belongs to this group. What they own and are demolishing is the old brick part not the shiny metal structures. They still belong to Colbond. Part of it belongs to AB Tech.
As far as Enka being a ghost town, Enka Village is a thriving community with new families moving in and raising their children.
I do hope they leave the clock tower. It would make a terrific centerpiece for anything they put in there. It would be a reminder of our past, but then some people would like Enka to disappear.

Sure. That's a dandy plan, since folks have no money and are losing their homes.
Or trailer in your case.

Agreed, it is an industrial colossus of a bygone era. We cannot look back but must look ahead. Do not live off of a legacy.....build one.

It's an ok area. I don't know about thriving since it appears more and more houses in Biltmore Lake and surrounding areas are for sale and can't sale despite the lowered prices. The pitch to make it the new growth area worked for a couple of years. People are pulling out now either because they can't afford their houses or because the area was not what they thought it would be.

Some people who live in or used to live in the area due not see it as a terrible, industrial looking area. To some people, it is a beautiful reminder of their life. Especially the people of ENKA Lake and the Enka Village.

I wonder if the two of you are from here originally or transplants in Bilmore Lake. Natives of Enka/Candler don't see an industrial site, we see the place that most of our parents/grandparents worked at, provided us with housing, a lake and a history

Unless all of you sew your own clothes, grow all of the food you eat, make your own trash bags.... I could go on all day..

But honestly we buy all of these things from somewhere right??? You get your computer from somewhere to get on the citizen-times.com and bitch and moan about new stores popping up.

We where told noooo… it is just a safety thing when they tore down the some stacks… we are not tearing down the mill… nooo it will be an industrial area… we have no plans to put retail here.. nooo trust me….. does anyone remember this site being for sale? Shady deals, just like Enka lake getting sold behind the scenes for a fraction of its value.

Nope no Walmart. I think that something like a lifestyle center will be the best thing for that area. Since biltmore lake is directly across from their and they dont want to see another thing like a walmart come to that area. If there is a big-box store in there it would definitely be either a target or a super target. Bring on a super-target.

I think they will leave the clock tower, If I was a developer I would leave it.

I remember our great county leaders spent a boat load of money for a consulting group to do a study for what area would be best to attract large manufacturing to the area, the Enka site and area was determined to be the best, railroad, water, and interstate access with industrial zoned large tracks of land….. now look, we don’t need another retailer, we need manufacturing.
