Is there a Spotter's Chart the ignorant can refer to when questions of identification arise?

Story does not tell us whether Father Marakis was wearing his clerical attire at the time. Tampa paper says he'll be OK, though, despite the tire-iron whack to the head.

What makes the difference? OK, so maybe the priest's garb would have made the idiot Marine hestitate, but this guy obviously has a screw loose. He probably would have thought it was a terrorist in disquise. He attacked someone based purely on their looks and/or broken English? Paranoid, racist, xenophobe. Yea, I'd say it's a hate crime. I hope the priest meets enough decent Americans that this creep doesn't spoil his view of our (mostly) wonderful country.

What a dork! Clearly this so-called defender of freedom needs to be charged with a hate crime, even though the GREEK Priest is not Arab.

Marine obviously failed the target-identification training (or never had it at all).

Doubtful that this moron would know what an Orthodox Priest wears.

This is truly saddening and the Marine should be charged with the applicable criminal offenses ("hate crime" may be the most pointless term on earth), but it's rather convenient for the head-in-the-sand lefties popping up to comment here. Trashing the military never gets old, and is such a refreshing break from those dreadful un-PC discussions about Islamic terrorism!

Something about this story is not correct - they are not telling the entire story is my bet.

As an ex-Marine, all I can say is being proactive is an admirable trait.

Whaaaaat?!?!? Are you crazy? I know Father Marakis. He's the most peaceful, kind person you'd ever meet. The marine was probably paranoid or something. Anyone who hurts a priest needs some kind of punishment by law. But knowing Father Marakis, he's probably already forgiven him.

So being proactive means clubbing an Orthodox priest on the head with a tire iron. You are a SCARY NUT. Mr. Proactive Ex-Marine, I was in Bosnia 1996-99, Serbia 1999-2001, and Iraq (Al Muthanna Governorate) in 2003-04. I say that not because of any point I'm about to make, but because people like you dismiss anything anyone says if they haven't done time in war zones.

Reference: The Eastern Orthodox Church, is the world's third largest Christian communion, estimated to number 225 million members. It is considered by its adherents to be the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church established by Jesus Christ and his Apostles almost 2,000 years ago.

2000 years ago. Think about that. Not that it would matter to a nut like you, but many of the Eastern Orthodox denominations (e.g., Greek -like the assaulted priest - Serbian, Bulgarian, etc.) spent 500 years or more as Turkish vassals. So, you know, there's a certain unpleasant irony to anyone reading this story who's spent a minute or two studying history. And, then, there's the pleasure of reading reactions from fools like you who can't tell a terrorist from a priest representing a 2000-year-old faith.

Shame on you. Shame. Shame. Shame.

All you have to do is follow the Rifqua Bary thread to see how these ignorant Talibangelicals think. The funny thing is that the greek priest represents the essence of Christianity as the Orthodox religion represents the original form of Christianity and remains unchanged since about 325 AD. I know, I know ... that and 25 cents'll get you a cup of coffee, but I find it amusing that some Talibangelical would attack an Orthodox priest because he hates muslims.
