State's Cigarette Tax Increases Today

Perspectives vary widely on the $1-a-pack tax increase on cigarettes that goes into effect today, making projections about increases in state revenue and improved health of the citizenry hazy at best.

Ditto, and on potato chips, ice cream, candy bars, pizza etc. Tax everthing. Hey, what the heck, let's pass mandatory pedestrian insurance too with a small fine for not carrying your ID card and a hefty one for failure to have the insurance at all. You never know when you'll slip on the ice or a tree branch will fall on your noggin. Suck it all up. People are already giving half their pay up without a fight. It's like battered wife syndrome. They just keep returning for more.
