It is woderful to hear that the YMCA is finally going to use the land that they have on Pinney Street to build this facility. My biggest concern is how will the town manage the impact on the already congested 5 Corners intersection.

DOT is planning to construct a roundabout at this intersection some time in 2010. I hope that they are considering ways to move pedestrian and bicycle traffic through the intersection.

The town should be looking at the possibility of constructing sidedwalks on Pinney Street and in the neighborhoods around the new facility to encourage pedestrian access and minimize the increase in vehicular traffic. State grant money should fund such improvements.

We have over two years to plan for this. The time to start is now.

This would be a good asset to the area if they have a pool any way...since the only swimming in the area crystsal lake is open like two days a year..!!!!

That bridge will be replaced this year, so you won't have to worry about it anymore. And although two at a time sounds good, that would cause new problems. If people used common sense and courtesy, it would work great, but I envision cars speeding up and running the stop sign to catch the car in front of it, because only one was going through.

While it looks as if they have broken ground across the street from our apartment complex on Pinney Street, does anyone know when this project is going to be finished and open to the public?

I had heard that construction will take about a year, but have long since forgotten where I heard that so I can't say how reliable that is.

I am thrilled they are putting in a pool and facility in Ellington. Any new news of when the construction will be done. I can not wait to sign up!

Certainly would not think a nice rural, with plenty of space to move area, like Ellington would need a y.m.c.a...is that not a club for inner cities ? Guess they won't be happy until every town looks like that dreadful Manchester. How about horse riding and trail walking... do we really need to erect more mortar and metal ? Very upset here

Couldn't be happier about this. I live right around the corner from here. Having a year round pool will be invaluable. I look forward to using this facility frequesntly with my family.

Why don't you get your own pool. They are destroying Ellington..all those big ugly eye sore houses behind Big Y..Soon Ellington will be another Manchester... ugly ugly ugly.. everyone selling their farms for $$$$$ to the damn Indians .

Are you picking on the houses behind Big Y just because that is the only new neighborhood that you can see from 83? Because there are LOTS of even bigger new homes going up in Ellington off of Mountain, Pinney, Abbott and Rt 140. The neighborhood behind Big Y is one of the smaller ones. And not everyone can afford to just build a pool. I know I can't. And I wouldn't want to because in New England, you can only use a pool for 3 months out of a year. I am thankful that there is going to be something in town other than the lake providing an option for my family to enjoy.

While they do look pretty close eventualy trees will block some of them..kind of a stretch comparing to Manchester don't you think...?? I drive in that neighborhood once in awhile..no gang banging, crack smoking, little punks around there..

I did a hard hat tour the other day. Facility looks great. Slated to open August 13th. Memberships based on a sliding scale according to your salary.

really want to go to the new ymca.
I wonder if they will have saunas?
Driving by it, looks country club-ish. I'm sure it's gonna beat a meat market like cardio, next town over.
That is, I hope there is no garbage music being PUMPED through the air obnoxiously. I cannot exercise to 95.7 and blowing my ears off with my ipod isn't gonna help to drown it out.
I'd bet a better workout from Beethoven than bending over backwards to formula fast food for the damaged ears. And Beethoven, of course, a choice by a decently leveled ipod volume.
Hopefully, this will be a cost effective facility. No cheap rates, but proper benefits, focusing on Family needs and goofs like me. I heard of sliding scale for membership costs. Wonder what that's like?

It is my understanding that the rates are very high and that it goes by your income. Is this a fact? Seems to me to join a Gym and have to pay $65 a month, very high in this area.

It all depends on your income. I looked online and for a single persosn in the 28,000-35,000 it's about 30 dollars a month, which isn't too bad since you get use of everything in the Y including classes
