While the investigation is ongoing, we wanted to inform you of an alleged theft discovered on May 22, 2012, at the United Way of the Flint Hills. As victims of an alleged crime, we are cooperating with authorities to ensure a speedy and appropriate resolution.

As a community partner, United Way of the Flint Hills is committed to transparency and accountability. Maintaining the trust of the community, our supporters and partner agencies is paramount to our organizational mandate. While it is unfortunate when alleged wrongdoing occurs, it is in keeping with our commitment to transparency that United Way of the Flint Hills engages the public not only regarding potential challenges, but also related to the steps we are taking to maintain trust and maintain our service and support levels.

Following an annual, internal audit, conducted by a third party company, an alleged theft was discovered on May 22, 2012. Immediately thereafter, United Way of the Flint Hills leadership reported the theft to the Emporia Police Department, filed an official report and pursued prosecution. Because the investigation continues, United Way of the Flint Hills is not yet able to share further details of the alleged crime. However as part our fiduciary responsibility, United Way of the Flint Hills maintains an insurance bond and a claim was filed to recover any loss associated with the alleged theft.

United Way of the Flint Hills takes seriously its responsibility to create lasting, positive change in the eight counties we serve, and we remain committed to working with every resident of the community to ensure access to the programs and services needed to lead a better life.

There is nothing more important to our organization than upholding the trust given by our loyal, local supporters, and we hope that the extension of your trust will continue as we work towards resolution of this matter. United Way of the Flint Hills remains transparent and accountable and will share related information as we are able.
