The seventh annual Symphony in the Flint Hills will take place on June 9 in Lyon County, announced Emporia Main Street director Casey Woods at a press conference Thursday at the Granada Theatre.

The next symphony, featuring the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, will be held on the Leets Pasture west of Bushong, about two miles south of Highway 56 between Council Grove and the Admire exit on the turnpike.

A group known as "Emporia Celebrates the Flint Hills," with Woods as marketing chair, announced a series of events during the week of the symphony to showcase Emporia and Lyon County.

"Emporia is the natural entry point for persons seeking to attend this wonderful event," Woods said. "Our ability to showcase the grandeur of the Flint Hills for tourists experiencing the symphony will have an estimated $450,000 impact on the local economy and solidify Emporia's status as Front Porch to the Flint Hills."

The major presenting sponsor of the event will be Capitol Federal, and Kent Townsend, CFO of the bank along with Emporia branch manager presented a check for $50,000 to support the symphony.

"It is really important for people to understand the absolute importance of patronage to the arts," said Emily Hunter, executive director of Symphony in the Flint Hills. "To understand the importance of art and culture in our area and our communities is a huge honor to be recognized by Capitol Federal as being worthy of their support.

This is the bank's second year of support for the symphony, and it has pledged a third year as well.

Why was Travel and Tourism not even talked about in this article. I thought that betty james was the tourism director for this area, not woods?? Oh well, whats the difference,, pretty boy woods or party girl james, I have enjoyed 5 of the symphonys, I just hope that someone will take charge and make Lyon county shine in the Flint Hills next year. THANKS Capitol Federal!

Emporia and the people of that place...aka: EMPORIANS...will take something nice like a symphony and fk it up with bickering, backstabbing and credit grabbing. Hopefully, everyone who attends the symphony will spend their money in the hills and stay away from that rickety old front porch with their "guest tax" and other money grubbing tricks and tactics of relieving visitors from their hard earned cash.

I have read some of the comments made on this on the gazette blog. Talk about dreaming, what the hell makes these people think that this will bring millions of dollars to emporia, it wont, and the surounding little towns, no way. The people of eastern part of kansas are the main ones that come to this, sure might be a few from afar, but not many. Look at the tour busses, many of them, they will get off the turnpike, go to the pasture, watch the show, and leave. Others will simply drive to the event and then return home, oh well blondy and pretty boy think they have it all figured out, makes one wonder if they have ever been to the symphony in the flinthills.
