USD 253: "Don't touch snow!"

“Why is this so difficult?”

This is a rule imposed on the students in USD 253. It does not appear in the student handbook, but it's a rule that gets enforced. Of course, this is to protect the district from liability in the event that thrown snow had a rock in it, but I'm fairly certain this is taking "covering our %*&&s" too far. Most parents don't know about this ridiculous rule and those who do are mostly too intimidated to speak up. C'mon, parents! If you feel they are oppressing your kid, say so! Put a stop to this. They tell us to not "helicopter parent" and so insulate our child from every little thing that they don't get to experience life, but then our kids go to institutions where all these well-trained experts make the rules, and they find themselves more closely monitored than prisoners. The decision makers live in mortal fear of low assessment scores and lawsuits and they pass that fear down onto our kids' shoulders with rules so strict they're afraid to breathe, but given the high tension levels over their test scores, it's just as well because there isn't any air to be breathed. Add to that the new tactics of punishing an entire class for the bad behavior of one, and we have created a frustrating and constricting school environment for our kids. Even the smartest ones are going to be beaten down and choked out by this unfriendly environment. Until our district can effectively discipline only bad behavior, and that only to the extent that they maintain the secure learning environment, and until they can provide a primarily academic environment that our students can relax and absorb information in, our district will continue to fail. Schools do not need to worry about fixing the social and behavioral problems of kids, they only need to worry about teaching the teachable ones and doing their best to teach the unteachable. With the current culture, they are turning teachable kids into the unteachable rather than showing unteachable kids that they are actually teachable.
