That's what our entrance signs say. We welcome all to our fair town.

Rome wasn't built in a day, neither was Emporia.

We welcome all of our foreign posters on these Topix forums. Let us know how things are going in your neck of the woods?

I had a foreign exchange student from Berlin who told me that a large influx of Turkish immigrants have caused problems there, and that there are frequent skirmishes among locals and Turks.

I love the diversity of our town. Being a southern girl, my parents worked hard to reverse the bigotry perpetuated by their parents and grandparents, and I am proud to have overcome that.

However, I must admit that even I was nervous during the time we had a large Somali population. Not because of their language, skin color, or different dress; I thought all of that was beautiful. My problem was with the fact that many were very dangerous and careless drivers, and the men were very rude to women, not just their own, but all women. I have first-hand knowledge of this, not just rumor and conjecture.

I wonder what it might have been like if the Lowther bid had been accepted for the Korean Presbyterian Seminary. I also wonder what might happen if Dr. Mike Lane's vision of expanding ESU exchange opportunities to Jordanian students comes to pass.

I would like to think that all would accept them with open arms, but I fear that might not be the case.

Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song

A-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow

The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde and sing and cry, Valhalla, I am coming

On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

Ah-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs FLOW
How soft your fields, so green
can whisper tales of gore, of how we calmed the tides of war
We are your overlords

On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

S-so now you better stop and rebuild all your ruins
for peace and trust can winthe day despite of all you're losin'
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ahh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

Only if so many people have some inane and self professed 'rights' of inclusion and I'm not referring to the Turks.'Borders' are best left as store marquees; there, at least, the term is one of diversity and inclusiveness as it applies to literature, and not of separation and divisiveness. I prefer the mix of a city where one is so accustomed to differences that one rarely sees them. Only opportunities for expansion of thought. Or would we be better without Marconi, Freud, Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Mendelssohn or Confucius just to name a few. Add M.L.King to the list and you've an American, Italian, Austrian , Englishman, German, Slav and Chinaman in this brief mix. Whom do you wish to exclude first to advance your race?

Hans Christian Andersen once said “Being born in a duck yard does not matter, if only you are hatched from a swan's egg.” We are all of the same stock.

From the intersection of Coronel Suarez and Pueblo Santa Trinidad; On July 18, we will mark the 12th anniversary of the senseless loss of 85 lives in the bombing of the Jewish Cultural Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Glad to see someone ask the other side of a sensitive question. Had it originally been 'why are Americans fat' none would be offended nor feel a protectorate need to counter with 'why are Americans trim and fit', as both observations are true. Human nature is predictable, sometimes, and revealing. Thanks, because I was truly bored and have found this very, very interesting.

Wow Mustafa, you came out of the box with an attitude didn't you? I was merely stating a fact about Berlin. Philosophy is cheap. I could say the exact same thing as you did only use my Portuguese ancestry as an example. I like diversity in a city too, but skirmishes still go on and much of it based on attitudes brought from the other world.

Good points, bluebonnet. How well I remember that time too. What a messy time that was for our community. I was shoved aside at the doorway to Wal Mart by a Somali man who scowled at me and uttered some kind of word in his language. It didn't matter to him that I was ahead of him and had reached the door first. As far as he was concerned, he was to go first. Well screw him and his other world attitudes. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Take your turn as is expected in the United States. Why should I adjust to some other culture's practice in my own country? I'm glad they're gone. All they did was bring trouble. It's not race, it's attitude.

This should be a delight for some sociologist somewhere. What better place than a university town?

About a quarter of the time, the only ones not inclusive of others are intellectually barren or half cocked from childhood bias drilled into their still pliable heads before they sealed into their current hard-headedness. If I had a dollar for every time some two bit idea spouted from these forums, I'd retire (and change my name of course) "Those who make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities" - Voltaire... or was that Skip Roper on 49 News @ 10

Why inclusive? Why not exclusive? How do we determine which way to go? Should we each make up our own mind on the issue? Should we force exclusive people to be inclusive? Should we exclude them? That wouldn't be very inclusive. Isn't this all a bunch of crap that can't be proven by science. When are we going to get past all this emotional touchy feely crap and start letting nature take it's course?
