Town Pool Opening 24 days past Memorial Day?

I recall that we used to open the town pool on Memorial Day, but that did not happen this year. Well it did come a bit early this year. Then the decision is to open the pool on June 18, 2009. Now that is 24 days past Memorial Day, which seems like a long time. I was told that in part since school does not get out till the 17th no point having it open. Didn't the pool used to open Memorial Day and open on a shortened schedule till school got out? I even recall that when we had some very hot summers the pool remained open past Labor Day for a couple of weeks. It seems to shorten the summer by 24 days is extreme. The forecast suggests the pool will be closed even another 5 days, so we lost a month of the pool. What really bothers me is my children and their friends from the pool have been anxiously awaited the opening, and spending time with their friends from summers last. I heard someone say we should bulldoze the poll and build another ball field. This was suggesting that having a Town Pool is more trouble than its worth. I find that a sad thought, as I always thought the poll was a great place to build community.
Also I understand the hours of operation have been shortened this year. This concerns me, as it feels as though the pool is being phased out or down. My girls love to swim, and don't play baseball, ya know?
Is this an economic issue? It seems at a time when so many of my neighbors are out of work this is one of the few options left to a community hit on hard times. These hard working souls are hard pressed to get the money together to buy these pool passes, and to have the pool being treated as if it is a necessary thing the town has to do in the summer, and not a labor of love to build community is unfortunate. Does cutting back on days and time at the town pool seem like the right and fair thing to do? How was this decision made, and what are the reasons and justifications for these decision? Could not the town stop the pool parties they have several times a year to save on money if that is the issue, so the pool could be open for the full summer for all in the community. The Town Pool is not just about a place to park the kids, really I know. I became a member of the PTA and my wife became a Brownie Troop assistant. It has been the only place we've been able to make friends in this town that is not always very friendly to the new arrivals.
What is right about the pool is that we have some big families and a family pass is just that, and I commend the town elders for that. Also the pool has had issues with the contracted lifeguards, and staff, but for the most part this was kept in check and monitored by several parents that frequent the pool, and hopefully this will be a non-issue this summer. Lets be more friendly and compassionate now, and not treat the people that frequent the pool as if they are interlopers, but neighbors. For some that work in and for the town, we all live hear, if someone occasionally comes to the pool lets open our hearts and doors be friendly and neighborly. I would certainly be willing to leave some money in a box for some needy kids to get in the pool when they don't have the fare, and many of us have helped make these children have a good time by sharing or food and drinks. I would rather have these children in the pool playing than roaming the town with anger and resentment at what they can't have. I will talk it up with the other parents this summer to see what we can do for the these children. At least if they become disruptive, we can talk to them help them change their ways, or identify them and ask them to leave. Again the Town Pool is a place that can have real positive impact on those that come.
