Why don,t we just close the school and build an athletic complex and save tax money?

Bushwacker stole my idea. A dome would keep the track from getting wet and washed out. They also could have classes in the stadium and wouldn't need to build a new school. When I went to EHS we had the track portion of gym class on the same track and did not have any problem doing so. I am glad I moved out of EPSD. Couldn't afford the taxes. Wait till all the Lower Mac. people can't afford their homes and EPSD loses it's tax base.

this was only a matter of time. This should have been done years ago by replacing the track along with the grass football field.Instead, we had to have an "athletic complex" hockey/soccer stadium with its magnificently expensive fencing, bleachers, and its restroom facilities a block away inside the football stadium. the camel got its nose under the tent then; the football field will be next, probably around the time construction begins on the 2nd high school. The "community approach" was masterful.

I prefer to run on roads and trails. Let RUNNER'S WORLD magazine pay for the track.

Save the money for a rainier day. Canvass the sports alumni. Hire some needy students. Put some inmates to work. Start a jobs program. Think creatively. It's a new day!

I've thought for years that Emmaus, of all schools, should have an all-weather track. This, however, is not the time to ask for tax payer support. If the private funding is there AND the public has access to the facilities, then they should go ahead and build it.

The earlier comment that all-weather track need resurfacing every few years at a cost of millions is a load of crap. Repaving a road costs a fraction of building a road. Same thing holds true with an all weather track.

Track is also one of the sport that has the MOST participants of any sport. EPSD just spent a ridiculous $2-3 million for baseball and softball fields, not because the fields being used by the varisty squads were subpar. No, they built new fields because EPSD & local municipalities didn't want to share a common field. There are far fewer baseball & sofdtball players than treack & field athletes.

I say with private funding, go for it.

How about that fenced in student parking lot, wonder what the price tag on that was?
It's called representative democracy. It's worked for well over 225 years.

For your edification and amusement, the fence on the parking lot was REQUIRED by Emmaus Boro. Read their development ordinance.

First off a dome is ridiculous, stop putting up this extreme comparison, it will only breed more animosity. As a member of the board I firmly believe that we should raise whatever funds necessary for an all weather track. Here are just a few cons of the Emmaus High School cinder track; it is over fifty years old, the dust from the cinder can cause upper respiratory infections (imagine running two miles behind fifteen others, all kicking dust into your lungs) you might as well not run, the times you run on your track determine whether or not you go to regionals or districts, we are denying our athletes the chance to run in very big races, and if you all are concerned about the failing economy (don't think I'm not) then how about we give our kids the chance for scholarships and signings with colleges, and the way we run our foot ball games it is extremely difficult to maintain up keep on a fifty-year old track when thousands of spectators walk the track each game, the track is steam rolled more than once a season, and lastly the injury rate on a cinder track is far higher than that of an all weather, were talking torn ACLs, broken ankles, insane shin splits, to name a few. To be able to swing this track we need all of the support we can get, private donations events to raise funds, but most of all we need the support of the community, you can't even begin to run Emmaus High School without the community of Emmaus.

If the cinder dust will cause upper respitory problems for lagging runners then there are two cures. 1- speed up and run in front or 2- If the Chinese are not too offended, issue USOC-approved masks for the back-of-the-pack runners. As for the injuries, good coaching and training that emphasizes proper warm-up and running technique can eliminate many of those injuries. No evidence has been offered to show that the claimed injuries are due solely to the present condition of the track or to substantiate that an all-weather track would lessen running injuries.
If there is private support available, then bring the million dollars to the next Board meeting.
Facts first; tax hikes later.

I think the school board should build a fishing pond, tons of Emmaus kids go fishing ,and then they can put a dome over it so the kids don't slip and sprain an ankle. What do you think tax payers should spend their money on after that?

All weather surfaces are safer for young and old. It will reduce low limb impact injuries and if a town will get together to build the new surface it will not cost one million. Just layout new track...call the local paver and install a new surface and thats it. Do not make it rocket science it is not.

The people against an all- weather track instead of the current cinder track are also probably still using a dial-up modem modem. Times moves on. If you don't like it move out. The cost would be pennies to the local tax payer. Kids are the future whether it be educational amenities or sports amenities. A well rounded child deserves both.
