At least 140 people were killed when a Spanish airliner crashed at Madrid's airport on Wednesday, AFP quoted Spanish media as saying.(UPDATED)
Spanish government confirmed that people were killed in the crash.
Smoke billowed from the plane at Terminal Four and a spokesman for the fire service at Barajas airport told AFP the plane had a capacity of 166 passengers.
Spanair is Spain's second biggest airline after Iberia and is a subsidiary of Scandinavian carrier SAS.

MADRID (AFP)— A Spanish jet skidded off the runway and crashed at Madrid airport Wednesday and billowing smoke came from the wreckage, television images showed.
It was not immediately known if there were casualties on the Spanair flight which media reports said had caught fire.
An emergency services spokesman, quoted by Spanish national radio, said the plane had been attempting an emergency landing just after taking off from the airport.
Eleven fire trucks were at the scene.
A spokesman for the fire service at Madrid's Barajas airport said the plane had a capacity of 166 passengers.

El accidente se ha producido más o menos a un kilómetro de la Terminal 4, en la Pista 36, la más apartada y conocida como 'La Isla'. El incendio provocado por el accidente ha quedado prácticamente extinguido minutos después de las 17.00.
Según testigos presenciales, el motor izquierdo del avión ha empezado a arder poco después del despegue. El aeropuerto de Barajas se ha reabierto al tráfico poco antes de las cinco de la tarde.
En el avión viajaban 164 pasajeros, entre ellos dos niños, y nueve tripulantes. Se trata de un vuelo de código compartido con el vuelo Lufthansa LH 255. Es un MD-87 fabricado por la firma McDonnell Douglas.
