Three Long Island volunteer firefighters were injured after they were launched from the back of a truck during a drill.

The four men were thrown from the truck when it veered into a wooden guard rail during a practice session in North Woodmere.

The victims’ names were not being made public.

The men, between ages 20 and 26, were conducting what is called a "drill team training exercise."

The drill team is a troupe of firefighters that practices acrobatic maneuvers with ladders and hoses, often while speeding down makeshift drag strips, hanging onto the specialized vehicles.

“It is something that has gone on for decades, 100 years maybe,” said Elmont Fire Chief Mike Capoziello.“It’s prevalent on Long Island. Upstate departments do it.”

Nassau County police have opened an investigation into the crash.

The most severely injured victim is a 26-year-old man with about 10 years of experience on the force. He suffered a serious head injury, although Capoziello said his condition has improved dramatically since the accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our engine members and their families. I’m really not thinking about anything else but that right now,” he said.

The accident prompted questions about the drill team exercises, which have little resemblance to routine firefighting conditions.

On a Facebook page filled with messages of sympathy for the recovering victims, a firefighter from a neighboring district criticized the adrenaline-filled drills as a waste of time and resources.

“What’s the sense in racing, u get nothing out of it except headaches. If fire districts have money for racing, they should establish career fire fighters like the FDNY,” the post read.

Despite the criticism, members of the Hempstead Fire Department drill team gathered for practice Wednesday.

When an assistant chief noticed NBC New York's news camera, he requested the team leave the training facility.

When NBC New York refused, the drill team began packing up their equipment.

Couldn't the drill team accident that happened in Elmont just as easily occur here in Sea Cliff? It is a 'sport' that is fun to watch for spectators. It is quite gruelling and dangerous for the participants.

It takes a lot of practice, just where the Elmont volunteers were when their accident took place. Is the instant thrill of it worth the possibility of serious head injury which one of the Elmont guys suffered?

Fire departments around Long Island feel almost obligated to take part in these events. The accceptance of peers take a valid part in the decision to have such a drill team. It is costly and takes money, is the Village of Sea Cliff paying for it with taxpayers' money?

All of these factors should be considered if a fire department is to have a team. There is also statewide thinking that perhaps the events are too 'rough' and 'not worth holding.' Perhaps the State of New York should investigate. Scrapes and scratches are plentiful and playful. Head injuries can cause permanent damage or death.

Meanwhile, village officials everywhere should look into it and decide whether the fire drill team events are worth it.

It's not bad enough this guy is on Unemployment, now he put in for Workers Compensation and Disability under the Elmont Volunteer Fire Department how the F does that happen, guys going to make more money after getting hurt?

Maybe if he was looking for a job instead of doing drills he would not have gotten hurt.

Power of volunteers, you have no idea what your talking about. This gentleman is employed and beleive me im sure he wouldve been rather fighting fires and helping the community rather then having to be on disability or workers comp and being seriously injured. SO, before you rattle off comments make sure theres some truth behind them.

This type of activity cannot survive in these times. There is no way that the Elmont Fire District can continue to support this at taxpayers expense. I'm sure the cost of this program is conveniently hidden in Elmonts budget. The Commissioners are doing a disservice to the members who's priority is Firefighting and EMS.

The Fire Districts around Long Island might as well be the 1%'er - they are Tax Theifs, the steal out hard working Tax money and refuse to tell NBC were the funds go and then throw them out of a public meeting? Can't believe more people are not up in arms ready to picket out front of your local Fire District for accountability and answers were tax money is spent and why / how?

Tax Thiefs , you havesome very valid points about the public deserves to know how their municipality is subsiding their fire department's extra=curricalur activities.
Drill team is a frill, a thrill and a pill to swallow. it's there to kekep up wit;h the next fire department in the neighborhood. Once in a w;hile the guys bring home a trophy and drive around town on a truck blaring the horn and holding the trophy high above thei heads like they just won the Super Bowl.
Let's bring this situation down to earth. Elmlont is a wakeup call as to how dqngerous nd costly this can be. The mayor and fire chief ought to be asked about this at a public meeting and give us some answers about their opiniopn of drill teams.

Same Fire District that refused to take down a Confederate battle flag? Tax money they say Millions $$$$ spent on a race team for drills, can they justify spending Millions on a Race car, Race related items in Elmont? Schools are suffering and cutting back teachers and programs, but Fire Districts have money for toys and race items for fun and pleasure? Something seriously wrong with this county!

Volunteer Race teams funded by tax payers more important the schools?

The Fire Districts around Long Island are the biggest tax scammers and abusers of tax money around Long Island. Elmont should be audited and investigated for fraud, misuse of government funds, and over the top spending who watches these guys, it's more like a VFW or Knight of Columbus Hall then Fire Fighting with the drinking and boozing that goes on every day and night in Elmont Fire District.

I like what is said about the fire departments overdoing the drill team thing. But please don't make any comparison to the VFW or KofC, where the members are honorable and not out-and-out boozers.

The Long island Fire Districts have gotten out of hand. The blow there budgets on useless things, the fire houses themselves are over the top and more like giant clubs and banguet halls, they have Bars, Professional kitchens with high end appliances, and halls they use for members only not available for public use is most fire houses (members only)- but tax money was used to build them.

No over sites and no one checking these guys, they do what they want, and spend tax money on what every they want. Tax payers have no say how they spend out tax money and we don' get to see where it is spend - we should get a full list of spending and audits done every year!

Some of the fire districts do have the professional kitchens and accoutrements. Sea Cliff has it, too, but does not reserve these for their own use. The firehouse is open to the public for parties and dances.

I say 85% of the Fire houses do have the Catering halls, big bars and lounges and professional kitchens, they even has numerous over the top fire houses in one town which really baffles me why they need 5 fire houses in 1 town, and they are with in 1/2 mile of each other.

Wish you would have identified the fire department in one town, Billy, would have been interesting to back up your claim and clamp down on them somehow.
Like I said before, Sea Cliff, my homektown, has the same good kitchen and bar for parties but they are usually reserved for affairs run by the Civic Association and other community groups open to the public. That is okay with me.

Seacliff just the the rest of the Fire Districts on Long Island have no one to over see what happens in these fire houses, they are more like "Knights of Columbus" halls, same about of booze is consumed maybe a little more in the fire houses.

These Long island Volley Fire houses are boys clubs and woman are usually not accepted. These guys have drunken Frat like parties every weekend and even nights during the week. The Chiefs use SUV to travel all around for free at tax expense, plow friends and buddy s when it snows with Fire issued SUV trucks and plows.

Time to rid ourselves of Volunteer fire districts and make them paid.

One misconception and one bad idea here:

Mike, the incident in the Sea Cliff Firehouse is fully covered in another thread headlined 'Wednesday Night', so look that up in this Forum. By the way, the 20-year-old woman involved was not raped but willingly took part.

Flabb, we went over the paid firemen idea on the same thread as above. Came to the conclusion that it would cost communities too much money to support such a venture.

No one is condoning what the young vollunteers did in the Sea Cliff Firehouse. KThe girl, 20 years old and not a teenager, was a willing participant. There was no rape or sexual assault. Some close to the scene felt that the mayor and the fire chief should have openly discussed it, but they didn't because it was a touchy subject that might have caused a black eye for the whole department, which would have been unfair.
