Thank you for your inquiry to CDC-INFO. In response to your request for information on the novel H1N1 flu virus, we are pleased to provide you with the following relevant information.
It will be very hard to tell if someone who is sick has 2009 H1N1 flu or seasonal flu. Public health officials and medical authorities will not be recommending laboratory tests. Anyone who has the symptoms of flu-like illness should stay home and not go to work. As part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), CDC works with a number of public health partners, including Federal regulatory agencies and state, county, and city health departments during an event such as a disease outbreak or infection. During the current novel H1N1 flu outbreak, states have the lead responsibility to report specific data, such as number of cases of confirmed illness, to CDC. CDC will not confirm or release data until it is received and confirmed by the state. Currently, the H1N1 investigation is ongoing. CDC and state and local public health partners are continuing surveillance (tracking) to identify new cases or ill persons. For the most current information, visit the CDC website where the latest updates are posted daily. Because only a small proportion of persons with respiratory illness are tested for novel H1N1, at this time, confirmed and probable case counts represent a significant underestimation of the true number of novel H1N1 flu cases in the U.S., so the true benefit of reporting these numbers to track the course of the epidemic is questionable. In addition, because of the extensive spread of novel H1N1 flu within the United States, it has become extremely resource-intensive for states to count individual cases. Instead of reporting confirmed and probable novel H1N1 flu cases, CDC has transitioned to using its traditional flu surveillance systems to track the progress of both the novel H1N1 flu pandemic and seasonal influenza. These systems work to determine when and where flu activity is occurring, track flu-related illness, determine what flu viruses are circulating, detect changes in flu viruses and measure the impact of flu on hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S. This information can be found on the CDC website at: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/reportingqa.htm For more information about the novel H1N1 flu virus, please visit the CDC websites: Novel H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Influenza Division http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/ What To Do If You Get Flu-Like Symptoms National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Influenza Division http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/sick.htm Thank you for contacting CDC-INFO Contact Center. If its not here, it will be soon. It is spreading faster than the regular flu. Contact the Carter County Heath Center; they will have the information you seek.

If you or your child test positive for the Flu TYPE A, it is 98-99% problability that you have the H1N1 2009 Swine Flu. The regular flu is only at 1 or 2 percent right now .

The biggest thing with the the H1N1 is not to panic and go overboard, it is just another strain of flu. It hits you faster than regular flu. You could be fine one day and the next day have it. THere is not any reason to panic. It has not quite hit the Ellsinore and Van Buren area, but it will. It will also flux back and forth throughout the year. They do have about 4 confirmed cases in Doniphan, 1 at Naylor and I believe 1 at Neelyville Schools, there are several other students out with flu, and I believe there are some cases in Poplar Bluff as well. If you test positive for Type A flu then they might have you tested for H1N1, but the test is very expensive and the treatment for Type A and H1N1 is the same, it is a virus so you basically have to let it run its course and move on.
The best way to help prevent it, is to wash hands frequently, get plenty of sleep, eat a well balanced meal, take vitamins, and disinfect things from time to time like doorknobs and such. Enjoy life if you get sick, see the doctor, do what he says and back on with your life. I am sure these are all the precautions your schools are taking. I am a teacher and I know our school is taking these precautions. They are even bleeching the water fountains and wiping down desks everynight. |

Well said...not the drama they are looking for though...:) |

H1N1 alerts are for morons! Learn basic mathematics and you'll see your running around like a chicken with no head with all your "the swing flu is coming" BS.

There is at least 6 confirmed cases of the Type A flu, which is also considered The H1N1 virus at Ellsinore school. I called the school after I had heard the "rumor" and the school nurse confirmed it. Am I the only one that will be keeping their child home?
Three in 4 of them are 5th and 6th grade.
i know of 1 in 7th grade

Is anyone keeping their kids home?

I will be sending my child to school. I do send bottle water so he doesn't have to drink from the fountain and also sent hand sanitizer but u cant shield them from life in general. Just keep an eye out for any sickness there isn't much difference between the reg flu and h1n1.

Teach children the proper way to wash their hands. Make sure they know to wash their hands after they blow their nose, before they eat, after they touch something/someone else, etc. Help them to remember not to touch their nose or eyes or put their fingers in their mouth. Remind them to cough or sneeze into their elbow, not their hands.
Teach them rather than shield them. They will be grown some day, whether you like it or not.:-) |
