REYNOLDS COUNTY, MO (KTVI)– Frigid weather may be to blame for the deaths of a Millstadt, Illinois, father and his two young sons.

The Sheriff’s Department says David Decareaux, 36, his son Grant, 8, and son Dominic, 10, went hiking Saturday on the Ozark Trail in Reynolds County near Black, Missouri.

Police were called at around 6:30 pm Saturday when they didn’t return to the lodge where they were staying.

A search was launched, but was called off around midnight when flood waters made the trail impassable. The search resumed Sunday around 7:00 am.

The father and his sons were found on the trail a few hours later. David Decareaux was pronounced dead at the scene. His sons were taken to the hospital where they died.

Wow,are all you people in Reynolds on drugs..A Dog is smarter than your sheriff.Everwhere in the world people do water rescues, and your sheriff just goes home when he gets a little wet and the water gets a little high.Your Sheriff is a SICK man,not doing his job it's time you people in Reynolds get this sick person out of office..How many people have to die or how many people get to walk free because of this sick man not doing his job?How many kids/adults have died/been murdered now?AND what was your sheriff doing to try to save them???Sleeping in his warm dry bed.

I don't understand why anyone would've gone hiking on Saturday. It rained all day. But, that being said, you can bet your butt that if was Volner's family out there, he wouldn't have called off the search until they were found. I can't even imagine the grief of the wife/mother. And to know they called off the search...it must've been torture for her. Had I known about it and been a member of the search party, I wouldn't have stopped. I understand that the flash floods interfered with the search, but I would've worked around it in any way possible. This is such a sad situation. And there were plenty of voters who did NOT vote for Volner. He's proven himself to be an unworthy Sheriff in the past. And already since the election there have been 2 dead babies in a meth lab explosion with no major arrests and now 3 dead hikers on his watch. Pathetic.

I have to agree with you for the most part, Kim.
Except, most people from the city do not understand the hazards of the terrain in our county.
I, for one, think I'd like to react responsibly in a certain situation. I hope I would. Don't think any of us know how we really would though.

One group of people on each side of the creek, there is a way too get to the back side of it,and he could have called in a helacopter with heat seeking cameras.he is just too sick to use good judgement. He needs to be removed form office.

Sheriff needs to go and start training and learn how to do the things he was elected to do.The waiting until something happens is not working out to well for him.Training, training training enforceing the laws for everyone the same way.Not just befor an election,ALL the time.

I agree with Scott. The search should have went through the night instead of leaving them to freeze to death there needs to be something done about there ignorance. There were 5 men that continued to look all threw the night until 8:00 am and never had any trouble with the water. Just didn't have enough people and time to find them in time.

When a kid s life is at risk an adult should do everything to try and save a child, even if it puts you at risk.Do anything besides go home and go to bed.Someone needs to teach this goofball sheriff guy a few things.

Did they even call for local volunteers to help with the search? My dad and I know that area very well from logging there and we have horses we could have helped but no one ever said a word till it was too late? I wish I could have helped but it is very sad to be that woman driving back home alone.

Hey Stupid Why go HOME ? Stay on the trails and keep up the search. This isnt a matter of the Sheriff getting tired. ITs TWO SMALL CHILDREN LIVES . YOU KEEP SEARCHING THOSE TRAILS .
What you get is Obama and Sheriff Volner.. Lives were at stake You JUST DONT QUIT SEARCHING ! Some or possibly all of them could be alive if they kept looking . Take a look at the Sheriff and his officers , Do any of them look like they could WALK A MILE OF TRAIL ? Bet none of the Deputies or the sheriff EVEN GOT OUT OF THEIR VEHICLE THE WHOLE SEARCH PERIOD !

If it was my family that died , I wou sue the sheriff Dept for not doing their jobs ! Law Enforcement are to do their jobs no matter the weather conditions. You dont quit when 8 and 10 yrs kids are freezing in the cold . Why didnt he call in citzens for help , people who knew that area ? why didnt he call anyone to assist him ? I know , he is the kind of guy who didnt want anyone to steal his thunder or make him look like the lazy guy he really is .

I hate to say it but I voted for the wrong man. I know that Roberts man is aggressive ,but I dont think from what I hear about him that he would have went home.

Oh well , I voted for obama and volner, guess I have to live with both. My bad choice stands out again to haunt me . Its terrible that two small kids had to loose their lives and a father. I think the kids father wasnt the sharpest knife in the drawer either for having those kids in that kind of weather ..

I read that Dave was a scout leader and served in the Air Force all across the world. That he had brought his family down as a surprise 12th year anniversary present because they were the out doorsy type. It's so sad that more wasnt done for that family. My heart goes out to the family and friends for their loss. Something should change so this never happens again
