Mr./ Mrs. SneedIn response to "Displaced Native" you need to
take a history lesson regarding this area.
Gilmer County, and more specifically Ellijay
had European settlers long before 1832.
I will have to agree with your assessment of
what happened to the native Indians that were
here before the Europeans. The displacement of
the Cherokees was a tragedy then and now.
It should be noted that prejucice was and is not
peculiar to Ellijay or Gilmer County. It is
in fact a joke for you to suggest that the
state of SC is without prejudice, even now.
Thank you for correcting my statement. I realize there were white Europeans in the area long before that date.
What I was referring to was that the county of Gilmer that we know today was created on December 3, 1832 by taking a portion of Cherokee County, and in 1856 a portion of Union County was added to form the now 427 square miles that make up Gilmer County. Two years after Gilmer County was formed, Ellijay became the county seat for government. I do apologize about the confusion.
I also am quite aware that South Carolina has its fair share of prejudice; I was making the comment in jest to Love Ellijays post.
