Hi! I was just curious if anyone knows what animal( I live out yukon) makes this awful screaming noise-it's really eerie and almost sounds like a woman screaming. I usually only hear it very late at night, never during the day. Thanks!

Possibly a screech owl? It could also be a big cat or mountain lion, jaguar.

It is a fox and that is it's mating call. Look it up online and see if the sound is the same (there is a recording on one of the sites). The little critter did the same in my area and thats it was. It was always moving down in the woods. It has sat below my porch once and had to turn the water hose on it. I have heard it from dusk till early in the morning.

By-the-way, there aren't any jaquars in North America.

If it is a panther (mountain lion or whatever) you would probably only hear it once. If you are hearing it every night I would guess it to be a screech owl. I have never heard a fox scream like that so I cannot comment on that but that may be correct.

It could be either a fox or a bobcat. Both are screamers. At this time of year however, it is probably a fox since they will howl year round, the bobcat is more "talkative" in Feb and March which is mating season.
I've hunted fox and their screaming can make you wish for ear plugs.

Actually yes a fox does sound like that. They are called a squawling fox. I have heard them several times. It could be a screech owl. And there is a difference in panther and mountain lion. I would bet 99.9 percent that what the person heard is a squawling fox.

Sounds like a panther to me. Living in East Ellijay for 33 years, I can tell you there is a panther or panthers here. The last time I actually saw it, I was only 15. My neighbors heard it about a month ago.
I hope I never see it again. I'll never forget it.
