It is a disgrace to the ellijay community to have these so called homeless people standing beside the road by wal mart. These people claim to be homeless and have a sign that says homeless 2 kids and no food or no money but yet they are standing there smoking a cigarette...Ok.. Where did they get the money for those? also not to mention the dog, where do they get the money to feed it? Also not to mention if they are homless where are there kids?? Its almost like they take shifts and there are diff ones out there all the time. This just really bothers me because these people are obviusly not homless, they are dressed well smoking cigarettes, and have a dog, and also to mention i seen them in wal-mart with a buggy full of grocreys. I think that something needs to be done about this issue, law enforcment needs to not allow these people to stand on the side of the road and ask for money when its obvious that they need to get out and get a job somewhere or at least be looking for one instead of standing beside the road!!!!

I have thought the same thing when I ride through there. Earlier in the summer his sign mentioned "lost job and pregnant wife"... kept waiting to see wife, baby and dog out there in the sweltering heat. I agree this needs to be stopped and he needs to get off his lazy butt and get neutered and most important get a job. Many fall on hard times but I think this old boy has found a way to pull heart strings and get free food. I have seen him receiving bags of fast food and cups of Java from SBUX... nice!

He is not the only one out there. How many different groups stand on the corner and beg for money?

You might be surprised at the numbers of "homeless" who exist in our county and surrounding communities. Jobs are scarce, foreclosures abound and those seeking assistance need direction. Suggest they contact COMMUNITY ACTION or FAITH, HOPE & CHARITY for information. If we are going to cut down on government involvement, it is up to the churches and community organizations, like the two mentioned, to fill the gap.

I understand that jobs are scarce but this time of the year apples are starting to come in and so on... if u look and keep on looking you can find a job. I am not judging these people but it does not look well standing on the side of the road saying your homeless smoking a cig and having a dog...

My sympathy is with the dog. I would say that it should be taken from him, but then it would probably wind up in our very high kill animal shelter, and be no better off.

this is also very much what our community here deals with. there is a couple who have admitted to having gambling problems and this is a way of getting money to do scratch off tickets! we also have an ordinance in our county that panhandlers must pay for and carry a license..silly I know but yes they gotta have a license to panhandle or get a fine.

Could someone with a business offer this young man a job? Then we could all see how serious he was about needing work...anyone here willing to take a gamble on the slim chance that he might say yes?

THIS is our future, folks.

Elderly people who worked hard their entire lives are finding themselves homeless, their life savings stolen by crooked stockbrokers and bankers.

40-somethings are facing unprecedented foreclosures, as jobs are shipped overseas.

And the recent graduates can't even get out of the gate.

Do you think that the young couple, with a baby that was born already owing hundreds of $thousands in debt to a Billionaire Wall Street Gangster, are EVER going to have a home?

A tarp will be their home.

The only "Hope" that's left is to die painlessly.
And soon.

I have always been taught that for one person to make money someone must lose money. Right now the ultra wealthy are making it, big time. Who does that money come from? I think you know.

That is a depressing outlook. I am some what more optimistic... but not much.

That's ridiculous. I built a new house recently, and a lot of people made money from the roofers to the plumbers. They aren't ultra wealthy. All that money came from me, but I don't feel like I lost the money. I have a beautiful new house in return. Sounds like more of the same class warfare and wealth envy to me.

You can bet if someone is making money that there is a loser somewhere else. Just look at Wall Street and the stock market, no better example that I know of.

Transportation continues to be a real challenge for many seeking employment or attempting to keep a job. Car, insurance, gas and the distances we drive as a result of living the "rural life" are a handicap for many. Apple picking is a job, but the pay won't offset the cost of getting to the trees.

Yes minimum wages just don't cut it. The cost of everything is out sight. I just replaced thermostat on truck. It cost 18 plus dollars, this is something that used to be about 5 bucks. Car insurance and home owners both went up this time. And food goes up every week. Gas prices have went back up also. So where is the balance between wages and living expenses?

Thinking back to the 1980's wages in dalton were about 8-9 dollars an hour range. This was a modest range but you could meet your financial obligations. Now days just to break even with a very modest lifestyle you would need 12-13/hour. The problem is those jobs have long since disappeared. If there are any jobs to be found most are just above minimum wage, or at the other end of the pay scale. I really don't see how this country is going to rectify this situation.

I know a young lady who went and bought one of those guys some groceries. This young lady does not have a lot of money but was trying to do something nice. She handed the guy groceries and went back in a few minutes later to shop for herself. She saw the guy returning the groceries and buying cigarettes. This has nothing to do with people being homeless or out of work. That guy is a hustler. Yes , there are people who need help but there are lots of people out there who are lazy. And I am sorry, but if the guy was homeless, he wouldn't have returned the groceries.

WOW! Are you serious?!? They have the balls to get out and ask complete strangers for help (whether they need it or not) and you want LAW Enforcers to do something about it?!

I am sorry, but you are sick!

I have been on the road "homeless" (home was on my back) for 6 months and I always found a way to smoke and feed my road dog. Even it I was holding a sign. The South is suppose to be hospitable, but I am sad to inform you that is a lie.

Sorry but it is not law enforcement's job to keep people out of your view, and last time I checked pan-handling is not illegal here.

If you do not like it then don't help them, but do not get online and talk shit about them or run to the law to keep other people from wanting to help another fellow human.

I am sorry, but if I saw you on the street I would help you anyway I could, even if it meant giving you a place to sleep.

You need to try living you life a little bit. There is a much bigger world then your little ol' Ellijay reality.

"Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, I will protect them from those who malign them." Psalms 12:5

"But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are
exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?" James 2:6

"For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." James 2:13-17
