Hi Don, Thanks for the question. I paid for the ads in the Times Courier. However, if I decide to qualify, I will be accepting campaign contributions
and any support you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks! Randy

I think this article is very interesting and makes some very good points. This is exactly what we HAVE to do.

You have my vote. I have watched you in action at the BOC meetings in addition to the articles. I wished that you were at the last one...when they voted to approve BOE request for a bond proposal. They said that the voters approved the sales tax funding during the last election and that they need to follow the voters wishes.(if insufficient funds coming from Sales tax would be automatically transfered to propperty taxes).....BS BS. In this economy, the BOE should have differed on the Bonds and tighten the belt. It is obvious that they feel entitled to spend regardless of the downturn in sales tax revenues. I would have liked to see the ramifications of a NO vote by the BOC.

I am thinking of running for the Board of Commissioners this year. Maybe Post Commissioner, maybe Chairman. I haven't decided yet. I just want to see what folks think. I am a conservative, so I know the Democrats won't vote for me. Neither will the liberal Republicans that ran us 60 million dollars in debt. Actually, they will "polarize" and work against me. That leaves me wondering what the rest of you think. Many people here know me, or know of me. I have written a lot of articles in the Times Courier to express my views on the Courthouse and the massive debt we are now in. So let me have it! Tell me what you think. Thanks, Randy
Give it up. I will get more votes than you will.

This message is in response to Randy Bell's running for the Board of Commissioners. Randy something must be done. I don't know who all that you would be up against but I say it is time for a change and change is going to come. We need people in office that will grow some balls and stand their ground for truth and justice as well as fairness to all. We need a leader who will make a positive impact on Gilmer County and turn this place around. This county has spent millions and we cannot continue spending money that the county does not have. I say go for it. I ran for school board back 8 years ago and will run again in 2012 for my post. I feel that much must be done in such a critical time of need. If you feel strongly about it, then do what you feel is right. I have probably burned some bridges myself but you know what? I told the truth and stated the facts. People want the facts and the truth. Good luck in your endeavors. The first place you need to clean house is in the Tax Assessor's Office. Trust me I know I worked there. They say the Commissioner has no way to remove them but it can happen with someone who is willing to fight for principle and for truth.

What kind of candidate doesn't even have the decency and courage to put his or her name out in public like Mr. Bell does and uses the name Satan?

I'm not running for commissioner Flipper. I'm just messing around with you stupid people who take this website so seriously.

I apologize for messing with you. However, I would have thought that anyone with half a brain could have told by my post that I wasn't serious. Sorry, Flipper, that I took your level of intelligence for granted.

I will admit my reason for messing with this post was due to Mr Bell starting his potential candidacy on a website like this. With all of the rumor spreading, anonymous posts and all around stupidity on this website, I couldn't take him very seriously.

so are you saying the commissioner has the ability to set propety taxes. I don't think so

Hi Honesty, yes that is what I am saying. There are 2 variable millage rates on your tax bill. One is set by the Board of Education, which this year was 16.250 mills. The other millage rate is set by the Board of Commissioners, this years being 5.00. In addition, there is a set millage rate of .250 that goes to the state. In a workshop I attended, Mark Chastain said that there will probably be a 4th millage rate added to tax bills and designated for bond payments. You see, in 2007-2008 they sold enough bonds (took out loans) that would require 100% of sales tax revenues at the then current level. Unfortunately, with the economy in such a steep decline, the sales tax revenue has corresponding declined. There is no longer enough sales tax revenue coming in to make the bond payments. When the new Walmart opens in Jasper, I would guess that they will decline by another $300,00(+ or -). The only way the Board of Commissioners can raise enough money to fund the County government AND make the bond payment is to raise property taxes by raising the County's millage rate. Hope that helps.

Are Mary and Willard Jones writing all this for you? I know you were their "pawn" several years ago. I really don't think you have the education to compose what you have written. Where is David O'Donnell these days? Do you still smoke pot like you did a few years ago? Do these people really know you?????
Wow! I have never been called a "pawn" before. People that actually know me know that I am too opinionated and hard headed to be anyone's pawn. To answer your question, no one writes for me except me. You don't think I have the educational background to compose what I have written? Well, why don't you tell everyone what my educational background is? I'll give you a clue. I first attended a community college and worked full time (4-12) and went to school from 7-3. Can you name the college or company I worked for? Then I transferred to a 4 year college, went to school nights, and worked for a major corporation during the day. Name them. Also tell the good people what my major was. Not doing so good are you! That's because you know nothing about me.
I said at the start of this thread that there would be organized opposition to me running. Here it is. But the part about pot smoking crosses the line. I will freely admit that I tried pot as a kid, but haven't touched it since I was 24. That's 27 years ago, not a few. I know you think Topix is annonymous, but I have already paid the $20 for your IP address. I understand you don't like what I have written, and I don't care. The difference between you and I, however, is I research what I am writing about, verify that it's true, and am able to PROVE it. That's why the "powers that be" ( and the ones that put you up to this) haven't been able to sue me, because everything I have written is true. I hope you can say that 2-3 months from now. As a small business owner, your allegations can impair my ability to make a living. You may want to ask an attorney what those implications can be. Am I "drug free"? Nope! I am diabetic and take a shot of insulin daily. But I can assure all the "real people" reading this that I would gladly take a drug test anytime, anywhere.
I hope the people that put you up to this stick by you because you will need them. I seriously doubt that when you are served they will even know your name though. And just for the record, at age 28 I qualified for and joined Mensa. Don't know what it is? Google it. I wouldn't be upset if you attacked me with facts, especially if they were about politics. I actually enjoy a good debate. But to post outright lies is out of bounds and I promise you I will see this through and we will be talking face to face very soon. I guarantee that you will have the opportunity to prove your allegations in a very public setting. I'll give you one chance to post the truth and apologize, after that the game will be on. And the truth is, you don't even know me.

Mr. Bell, I have a few questions....and I have served in government as an elected and appointed official on the state and local levels, so here goes...
1. How do you propose to promote more tourism and business development in Gilmer County without spending taxpayer dollars?
2. How do you propose to deal with rising unemployment when you reduce county work hours and cut jobs? How do unemployed folks help the economy?
3. What do you plan to do about the outrageous property tax appraisals that have brought so much pain and heartache to us all lately?(If you don't plan on firing ALL of the current tax assessors, then you won't get my vote).
4. What are the "essential" government services that you feel are beyond the cost cutting moves you have outlined?(If you believe it's public safety then I wish you would think again....there is a lot of waste in ALL departments.)
5. What is your stand on nepotism and would you do anything to weed out inefficient workers even if they're related to the high muckity mucks?
6. Do you favor term limits for elected officials? If so, how many terms will you limit yourself to?
7. Slander and libel laws don't protect public officials, so if you do get elected be prepared to deal with a lot more hostility than you've received on this forum. Can you handle that without "calling out" someone who bad-mouths you?
Anyway, best of luck with your campaign and bless you for being willing to serve your community. Most folks just don't give a damn.

Good post! It appears he cannot handle any kind of opposition. With the threats that he already made I think it would be a mistake to elect someone with this attitude into office. We need leadership in this county and I just do not see it from what I have read. If you do decide to run Randy you may consider seeking help with an anger management professional.

1. If you will go back to post #28, I outlined some ideas. The County is on the right track now and pursuing some grants to promote recreation. A feasabilty study is underway on the second Marina on Carter's Lake. I also would like to see the County pursue even more grants to promote recreation. The Apple Festival is a great tourism draw for the County and I would like to see more of them.( That will cost me votes). The subject of more ( maybe a " Georgia Mountain Biking Festival") has been broached. but insurance regulations seem to stand in the way. I would like to see the County work with the Lions Club in an effort to better use the location more effectively. Before anyone "hammers me" I think the Apple Festival and the Lions Club are good things. I just think more of good things is better.
2. Rising unemployment. I strongly feel that reducing government and "repatriating" folks to the private sector will be beneficial in the long run. It would result in reducing taxes and a stronger economy. If we keep on the road we are on, there will not be enough folks paying taxes to pay the ones working for the government.
3. Tax appraisals. I got a letter from Citimortgage last week saying they are raising my escrow payment for insurance and taxes from $126/mo. to $253/ mo. Part is because of the increase from the School Board, and part is because my land is worth $28,000/ acre, when a foreclosure near me just sold at $300/acre. The BOC asked for the "re-evaluation" and I strongly feel we need another one.
4. Cost cutting. I think cost cutting can be done everywhere. The 2 essential services that I think County government shouls provide is Public Safety and Roads and Bridges. Everything else, in my opinion is a frill. Why I wouldn't advocate cutting services, I would certainly look at ways to increase efficiency. Private enterprises constantly look at ways to cut costs and increase efficiency and I think Government should do the same. I am not saying the people we have are inefficient, I am saying the Commissioners Office should constantly press for innovation and better ideas.

better ideas.
5. Nepotism. One of my pet peeves. The "good ole boys' syste,. How long has it been since you have seen a county position advertised? I think government should run as a business. IF I decide to run, and IF I was elected, every County job would be advertised and applications taken. Interviews would be held and the best person hired. I have never seen that happen in Gilmer County, but it should.
6. Term limits. I favor term limits and would only run one time. After 2014, I will be getting 5 years for refusing "Obamacare"
7. Slander. I really can't answer that. Can I handle it when someone lies about me without "calling them out"? I'll be honest and say probably not. I will call them out. If someone wants to disagree with me, I have no problem. I really do enjoy good debates and I am old enough to know I can learn from them. But if someone wants to say outright lies about me, I will respond. I apologize, it's just the way I was raised.

Sorry, Tpopx has a limit of 4000 characters so I had to split that. I failed to address your concerns on firing the Assesors. Ther are limits to what the BOC can do outright( having been in Government I am sure you know this) but the BOC DOES control the "purse strings" and I honestly feel that we have leverage that way. The last "revaluation" was done bt "SassyBritches" and her compradres because they knew we had to pay for the absurd amount of money they were spending. Thanks for your questions, honestly. It is so fullfilling when someone wants to have an honest debate instaed of slinging "mud". I mean it. Thanks!
