I've lived in Ellijay for 10 years now and eat out way more than I should, so hopefully I have a pretty good idea where to eat around here.

The best restaurant in town is Happy Family. I've sampled most of the menu as well as several dishes not on the menu. I wouldn't recommend the dishes in white sauce (e.g. Moo Goo Gai Pan), but only because their brown sauce-based plates are to die for. The second best place in town, in my opinion, hasn't been mentioned yet (or I missed it). That's the Cajun Depot Grill. It's terrific, especially if you dig seafood. Dennis' barbecue shrimp is unbelievable and the crabcakes are a great starter. I would, however, avoid the jambalaya and stick with the gumbo or red beans & rice. Okinawa is probably my third favorite place in town, but if price is an issue, you may want to come here on Monday ($9.99 specials).

For BBQ, I would say Walker's and Shane's...Poole's and Pink Pig are too hit and miss for me, but the other two are consistently good. Our southern joints are all solid: White Columns, Sue's, Davis House...but I'd place them all a rung below Cracker Barrel. Our Italian restaurants are disappointingly mediocre, but I'd take Charlie's over Il Forno as the lesser of two evils. I would agree that JR's pizza and wings are excellent, as well as that Salsa burger they make (I forget the actual name of it.) As far as Mexican goes, if you want fajitas, go to El Rey. For all other things Mexican, go to Las Palmas. Muchos has a fun atmosphere but the food is just alright. The Jolly Roger and The Wharf both have decent seafood, but you really can't beat the aforementioned Cajun Depot.

I'll wrap this up with a couple places on the square: Ray's chili dogs are probably the best value in Ellijay. They take something so simple and make it delicious. And I've been to the Canterbury several times and have never had a bad experience. Try the Chicken & Rice soup with a Hot Pastrami sandwich. That's good stuff.:)

Musicman,
At one time, I would have agreed with you about Happy Family, but last time I ate there?? If grease POURING out of your egg rolls is your thing, go right ahead. Surely wouldn't recommend Tin Loong, either. The food is not up to correct temperature, and how they get away with it is beyond me!!
El Rey's gets two thumbs up, in my book. Generous portions, reasonable prices and fantastic service.
Haven't tried Ray's chili dogs, but I'll stick with The Pool Room. No doubt about it, either will probably give you indigestion, but you can't beat the friendliness and prices of the Pool Room, and an order of fries/onion rings is PLENTY to share at a very reasonable price.
Ellijay restaurant & White Columns are tops for home-cooking. Ellijay restaurant (Mike's) has very reasonable evening prices and a great salad bar.
Last time I went to Jolly Rogers, it made me sick from the grease and the oysters & crab were undercooked.
I prefer to spend my money with local businesses, to keep the money in the community.

i'm proud to be a hillbilly from ellijay and wish all the chains coming to town would go somehere else. without any doubt the best place for any meal in ellijay is at mikes ellijay restaurant. their family has been in the restaurant business for over 70 years in ellijay so they must be doing something right. their food is country cooked and very reasonably priced and as always very tasty. there are other good restaurants in ellijay but mikes is best.

Ate at White Colums for the first time last night and it was good and very reasonable prices as five of us ate for $40 including a five dollar tip.
Mike's or (John's as the locals call it) is good and has a great salad bar. Fried chicken, burgers to steak.
East Towne Grill out 52 east has good burgers and great chili cheese fries!!
I haven't tried the new italian restaurant across from Goody's but can say the one that was there a year or so ago was not good. I prefer the easy drive to Canton to eat at Provino's! Excellent food and the salad and dough rolls are to die for!! The price is reasonable to. I will try the italian place at Goody's and give them a chance to win me over.

Mike's is out 282 from Dairy Queen, about a mile on the left.
White Columns is in the Piggly Wiggly Shopping Center.
Both offer vegetables and meat (White Columns all day, M-F, closed Sat./Sun.) and Mike's offers vegs. & meat, then a menu during the evening, as well (great prices for the portions!) with a great salad bar that comes with the evening meal.
You'll enjoy the food, service AND help the LOCAL economy!!

We spent last weekend in a cabin near Ellijay and decided to go out for dinner friday night. We're so glad we did we went to Mikes Ellijay Restaurant had a great meal super salad bar and very good service. after sitting around the cabin all day saturday we decided we'd go back to Mikesagain and the second time was just as good. We were a little dissapointed by the same waitress not being there but we were told shes off on saturday night but the service was still very good. Please try their ribeyes and salmon both were great and the price is very reasonable. Saturday night we both had the ribeye and tea and the bill was $25.00 and thats with the salad bar.

Actuall the best place in Ellijay to eat is Jilly's Pub! Just opened, it is the same owner as JR's Sports bar! You gotta go.

The Pink Pig by far!! Had a steak there Sunday Afternoon, wounderful, cooked just the way I wanted, and the service is awsome. B-B-Q is their trade, but you must try the rest of the menu as well. Chicken livers, yum yum.

Everyone has their own ideas about what constitutes a good restaurant. I miss having what I consider a good Chinese restaurant for carry out. I have tried all three and been disappointed.

What I woold like to see in Ellijay is a Red Lobster .. always good food. Fat chance of it ever coming here though.

The Long Horn Steak House is good but their prices have gone out of sight and so has my business.

Sadly, Ellijay just doesn't cut it.

I agree about Pizza King. It's GREAT! Unfortunately we've figured out why their pizza is SO good....it's full of grease. You put a piece on a paper plate and it usually soaks through.

That being said, we still LOVE their pizza and love to eat there...just not too often. Plus they have the best senior discount in town...25% off everything.

Senior discounts and admitting that you like to eat grease? No doubt you want the rest of society to pay for your heart surgery. Do us all a favor and keep eating that junk until you have a massive MI.
