Tommy Hunter stopped by today. After talking with him I watched his interview on FYN. I think he is a viable candidate.

We may not have a perfect candidate but who is better and why?

watch that interview again and realize it is more of an advertisement than an interview and it is very biased. Is the guy from FYN running for sheriff too? Why is the interviewer debating him. The interviewer needs to just ask questions and leave it at that.

Shane Bowman is mor connected with the people is the best candidate to really begin a cleanup of this area. He is fair and his wife and he not only work in the community, but live here too. Shane is really a great guy and anyone who meets him and talks with him would agree.

Shane is a good guy but has neither the leadership or management experience to lead our county in these troubled times.
If resume is the criteria, Stacey should win hands down but that depends on whether Gilmer wants to go with the most qualified person for the job or falls victim to the gossip mentality.
Either way, I thank both Stacey and Shane for their service to our county.
I would appreciate if the holier-than-thou crowd would keep this race to the subject of law enforcement."

Aside from the morality thing, what about staying within budget? The current Sheriff doesn't even consider the budget; he just spends as he wants. When other departments were asked to trim their budgets they did so; when the SO was asked to trim theirs they refused to cut any significant amount.

You are VERY misinformed & need to do some further research for yourself before you make your decision instead of listening to what Tommy Hunter obviously told you when he paid you a visit. Budgets are public information and are available for people who actually want to know the truth.

I feel like that Stacey is the best candidate overall to lead our Sheriff's dept.He has gotton beat up over hid budget but do you want our officers to be on duty protecting all of us while we work & sleep to be poorly paid & equipped? Try to be upset about paying 30 million for a 15 million dollar courthouse. The guy from Kentucky only received less than a hundred vote two years ago in his former home...

I've talked to him before, voting for Stacy.

I think things work best when elected officials don't stay in power very long. It is time to have a new sheriff, one that will work with the commissioners within a budget. It would be very nice if he didn't have to stay in budget but as you mentioned, the overspending for the courthouse means we do not have the money to do the things we used to do. We can either cut our budgets or we can stop making payments on the bonds. This is accounting 101.

If you really do attend the BOC meetings, then you should KNOW how much Sheriff Nicholson HAS CUT out of his budget over the last few years!

Then I guess you missed the BOC meeting where the Sheriff was asked to cut additional money after he had already made major cuts. He cut a little more but basically said we are down to bare bones. We have 478 square miles (or whatever the number is)and one two or three people on duty on some shifts. He basically had the guts to say he was charged with protecting this county and that he could not do it with any less. That his employees hadn't had raises in years and there was nothing left to cut.

It would have been irresponsible for him to have cut any more. Before we end up with no police on duty we should eliminate road maintenance for a year, close the animal shelter, eliminate health care coverage, furlough all county employees one day a week and close the county offices on Wednesdays. I don't know, but we can't run the county with no police coverage. And I don't think bringing in someone new will help much as you can't not spend money you already don't have.

Deputies were taking Gilmer County cars to Fannin and Cherokee Counties as well as to Blairsville. They were not parked voluntarily by the SO. If someone is breaking into my house I can take care of that but if my house is on fire and I am trapped in the second floor I can't handle that. When services such as the Fire department have to be cut then why should the SO be exempt? Personally I would rather see us default on the bonds than to see any essential service cut but if we must save face and not reduce the bonds then all departments should cut by the same per cent.

I think what is interesting is that NONE of those that are running, except Stacey has ever been to a commissioners meeting. Procon is right. Hunter is talking about a game he has never played. KY boy, well, enough said.

Stacey leaves after he says what he wants to say (or asks what he wants to buy). He does not stay for the full meeting to see how the county is trying to deal with the financial problems brought about by over spending.

I don't know where you get that fire services have been cut. I did some research and found out that a starting off deputy sheriff makes approximately 26000 annually whereas a starting off firefighter makes approximately 36000 annually. Also, every fire station in the county has engines and other vehicles in them but do not have personnel to man them. I don't want to see any public safety service cut but to say that the SO is exempt from cuts is ridiculous. They have cut as much if not more than fire department.

You need to check your numbers; they are not accurate.
