Good that they didn't close down. I think Harvey was more prosperous when they sought out the home repair and DIYers on top of the contractors.

I went in a few years ago with my wife, she inquired about a kitchen remodel. They seemed to be doing well at that time.
I know many businesses are hurting in the new Obama economy and worry about what the future holds.

No, 84 Lumber is still around and doing business. They are a big chain.

Harvey Lumber Co was local, I found this on their website

History tells us of the story that a 20-year-old Confederate soldier, William Thomas Harvey, came to Columbus in 1863. His home was in Talbot County, but he decided to make his living in Georgia's industrial sector. After an honorable discharge, W.T. Harvey sawed timber for railroad construction and repairs to continue to support the Confederacy.

Shame to see a business that lasted so long go under, well at least get sold you know.

No, 84 Lumber was the major competitor when I worked at Harvey back in the late 1970s.

One of my earliest jobs, worked there at Harvey when I was around 19-20, then used that experience to move to Atlanta for a job up there at the equally historic Carolina Lumber Company, which also dated back to Reconstruction era times.

Yeah, I worked for Harvey Lumber for about three years way back around 1980 and back then 84 Lumber for sure was a separate company.

Seems I recall their yard was out Milgen Road near the Post Office Main Branch back then.

Harvey at the time had the downtown location, and two new locations, one on Gentian Blvd. and one in Phenix City.

This company since bought out is terrible . Can't keep help cause won't pay enough . Also doesn't care if their employees get hurt or not, have them doing things very unsafely. Also will not fix anything !
