Get rid of it? As in nuke it or bury it under lava? Get real!
Look, you can dissolve the village government, but ELLENVILLE, as a hamlet, would still remain! IT would still need water, sewage, lighting, street maintenance, leaf removal, police coverage, building code enforcement, etc., etc. THAT will either have be done by the TOWN government, or separate special districts, overlapping and creating MORE bureaucracies, and MORE cost, OR they would have to do without such desired services. THAT is what the Ellenville Government Study Committee determined when asked to look at dissolution, so that option is not going to help or save costs. A city, which would take some work, COULD solve some, but not all, of our problems. I wrote about this YEARS ago, in Wawarsing.Net , and in the Ellenville Journal. To see what I said then, go to: http://www.kryolux.us/wawarsing.net/22/COPDF/... and http://journal.kryolux.us/PublicDomain35.pdf (read http://journal.kryolux.us/PublicDomain33.pdf and http://journal.kryolux.us/PublicDomain34.pdf to understand the concept of "The People" as it relates to establishing a polity appropriate to its needs) |

Let us know when you have something useful to contribute, pal. |

Krulick do you think the town could handle it?
Do you think taxes would go up if it was a city? |

Town handle what?
First, a city gets to keep its sales tax; right there is a tremendous opportunity to hold onto revenue currently siphoned out of the village, AND to offer LOWER prices than in the rest of Ulster or Orange or Sullivan, hence attracting MORE stores and business into the village, and more shopping. Cities have various advantages when it comes to getting money from the state, and can replace property taxes with a more fair and easier to administer income tax system, as Yonkers does, and many municipalities in PA or Ohio. But most services cost what they cost, and the change wouldn't affect that much. |
