Full story: RGT Online

WAWARSING, New York & ELLENVILLE, New York -- -- Demonstrating the broad, bi-partisan support for the effort to reopen the historic Nevele Grande Hotel as a family entertainment vacation destination with casino gaming, the Ulster County Legislature last night unanimously passed a resolution urging New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo and State ... Sorry, but "family entertainment vacation destination with casino gaming" is a fantasy oxymoron that belies the reality of what happens when a casino invades a small community.

And the unanimous vote is a bit hypocritical, as every other town in Ulster County has already gone on record that they did NOT want a casino in THEIR town, but they have no problem if it's down in Wawarsing. I wonder if anyone bothered to STUDY the effect of casinos and gambling on small communities and the many negative impacts before voting on this.

Here KRULICK goes again, He does not want a casino, he does not want Walmart. I guess he just wants the Nevele to stay closed. Since they closed my water bill has tripled and because of certain people they mowed the lawn because it was getting to be a eye sore. But KRULICK is out to be heard over and over again. Rest in Peace

Well, "Frank" (as if that's your real name), you guess wrong, strawslinger. Of course I don't want the Nevele to "stay closed," but that doesn't mean I support a BAD use of it! Your use of the False Dichotomy Bifurcation Fallacy (there are two options and two options only) is noted. When you are ready to address the actual issues and points *I* raised, let us know, OK?

Yes, I SAID they were MY columns, because *I* wrote them. BUT they are filled with support evidence from authoritative sources and experts, so what is your problem, other than you don't like me for some unknown and likely petty reason? Why don't you READ the columns first, and THEN, come back with any refutation that proves what I pointed to as being wrong in any way. Of course you won't, because that would require intelligence and work.

Yawn. Ad hominem Pee Wee Hermaneutics are no replacement for actual evidence and logic. Too bad you had nothing of value to contribute.

Not all change is positive. AS I have pointed out, casinos are ultimately negative influences on small communities. The jobs are never as promised, and the drain on local resources are not compensated for by revenues that mostly leave the area. Casinos get rich by making others, including many locals, poorer.

The case against casino gambling so far: it breeds crime and corruption; distorts local politics and encourages end-runs around proper procedure; drains resources and revenues from local governments and businesses; and fails to deliver promised jobs and economic development to the community. Though social costs to a town, region, or state can be measured in the dollars and collective pain borne by the community-at-large when casinos arrive, the costs to certain individuals and their families can become overwhelming, even all-encompassing.

"Studies overwhelmingly demonstrate that gambling's costs outweigh any economic benefit; that problem gambling rises as gambling opportunities proliferate; that economic hardship and crime likewise increase with more gambling; and that the level of wagering in this state and nation is increasing at a rate that is incompatible with true economic growth. It is the false promise of economic salvation. Any economic benefit realized from gambling is far outweighed by its economic and social costs." - Senator Frank Padavan, in All Gambling, All the Time
