Richard Petty, 23, of Pine Bush, NY, was riding solo on a 2012 Ski-Doo with a group of six other riders eastbound on River Road about 10:25 p.m. when three of the riders failed to make it around a right-hand curve, police said.

To the Petty family: people in Forestport are so sorry for your loss. I imagine he was enjoying life a great deal before the accident and what more do you want for a young man living life?

You may see someone comment that "he was going too fast," or make some other callous or thoughtless comment. The TOPIX site is famous for that. Please know that the majority of people in our town can envision that happening to one of our own kids or grandchildren. We've experienced the loss of a few people over the past few years so we know what you are feeling all too well.

Once again, we are so very sorry for your loss....

Sad that there have been losses of young people in our area to snowmobile accidents. It can be an enjoyable, fun activity, and then there is a time when a dear one is lost and a family is devastated. Regardless of how it happened, there is no justification of a posting such as Smiley has posted here.
I send my condolences to the family and friends of this person, unknown to me, but nevertheless, a loss of life should not be responded to in one's idiocy by calling him a Moron.

It's amazing to me that you would have such a lack of respect. This was a horrific tragedy to all of his friends and family. He was the nicest man I have ever met, the best father and husband. It's easy for you to sit behind your keyboard and say these hurtful things. Imagine his little girl will never be able to hig or kiss him again. You are what's wrong with the world today. Richard was a great friend husband father and person. Comments like this make me sick. It was a horrific accident which took him from us and he has left us all broken hearted. Anyone who has the need to say anything but kind words should be ashamed of themselves.

He should have thought about that before he drove beyond his ability in a unsafe manner. Nobody to blame but himself. His child should be upset that he wasn't thinking about his family, but rather was thinking about operating a snowmobile in a manner that was risking his life.

Nice priorities.

I think that instead of responding or trying to make the IDIOTS who post ignorant comments on here, they should just be ignored.

It's gonna happen every time....the anonymity behind TOPIX brings out the worst in people.

Once again, residents express sincere sorrow at your loss. We apologize for someone who can only comment negatively about something as serious as this.(These are the kind of people who applauded the Connecticut shooter.) They have nothing else but to put their anger and inadequacy out there. LOSERS and not a representation of most of the residents in this town.

I just vowed to myself that I will NEVER respond to an unreasonable or insenstiive comment on this site again. These people posting are just sitting at their computer WAITING for someone to respond so they can once again throw out stupidity. This is passive-aggressive behavior which MEANS they don't have the courage, confidence or intelligence to deal with things head on.(You know, the kind of people that do destructive things privately and sit back and watch the damage.) Sickening. Get a back bone. END OF COMMENT to anyone who can't take a moment to realize that this guys family is probably reading these. What jerks you are.

You have no clue what went on, was you there, don't think so! So before tell people or his young child something, get your facts straight! You should be ashamed of yourself for the lies and hurtful words you wrote! His priorities was his family and the lord! But since you know everything, your probably already knew that! Richard was a kind hearted soul, he lived for his wife and child. What happen was a tragic accident! Do you know what the meaning of a accident is? Just because a newspaper wrote some words down doesn't mean its what truley happen!! I'll pray for you!

Perfectly said Ellenville. One problem is that the person who wrote that isn't ever going to feel ashamed of themselves for making such crude statements. Wasn't it great how this person dragged this guys little daughter into it? Jerk. I swear, in my life I have seen meanness like this come back to bite people over and over. I'm not too much in to the concept of Karma, but I have seen that what you put out in life comes right back at you. If it's good intention, it will come back. If it's cruel/mean intention/acts, that same response is coming...it's right around the corner waiting for the right time to rebound back. Enough said about the jerk who wrote that. Thanks for your post. I would hate for this young guy's familyt o think we're all like this.....no more responding to negative postings....deal???? If two of us don't, then maybe a few more won't, etc.
