Can anyone give an update on what is going on with Schaefer's Canal House? Last I heard, the new owner tried to burn the place down. It was investigated on 4-20-07. Don't know the outcome. Work on the docks is on going, but there does not appear to be much else happening.

We stopped by there to take a look over the weekend, after reading the (highly innacurate account in the Mariner.. Nothing that was mentioned in the article has been done, but the "boardwalk" is nice. Still no work on the actual docks, marina or fuel pumps.

I just drove by SCH yesterday (June 27). There were a lot of workers working on landscaping and the outdoor patio area. I should have asked one of the workers if they knew when do they anticipate a grand opening, but I did not. Christopher's Waterfront Cafe at Summit North Marina is getting very close to opening. Should be next week from what I have been told. It will be nice to have an alternative to the Chesapeake Inn.

I just drove through North Chesapeake City, MD where Schaefer's Canal House used to located. There were signs in about 40% of the front yards of residences that said HOOTER'S with a big red X through it. The signs also said something like "No chain stores". Maybe it is true that Hooter's is trying to locate a frachise in North CC? I have been to Hooter's one time. Food is average and slightly expensive. Beer is expensive. Waiteresses are dressed in short-shorts with nylons, and tight fitting T-shirts. Not really a big deal in my opinion. IMO, before anyone comdemns it, they should at least try it once to see what the hubbub is all about. JMHO.

Hooter's has its own yacht: a 97' Jack Hargrave designed CMY:

Please HELP the people of Chesapeake City, MD boycott Hooters from taking over the old Schaeffer’s restaurant. What a shame for such a wonderful little town to be ruined by a chain restaurant of that nature. Think back to the day when Schaeffer’s was open: tiki bars, reggae by a live band, dancing, laughing and a family environment. The inception of Hooters in Chesapeake City will ruin the small town atmosphere.

What hppen to SC House? We were going to drive down from PA today to have lunch. Thank goodness we saw all the comments. I would hate to see a Hooters, not that I have anything against Hooters, so many people from our area (Phila) come down there just for SC house.

Back in the 80s I waitressed at SCH for a long time. It was a fun place to work, most of the time, and I loved walking the docks. One of the neatest sounds ever in the winter is listening to big chunks of ice hitting each other as they float thru the canal. I'm not sure why it popped into my head but does anyone remember the name of the chef who worked there way back then? He had some trouble over the board, and Sunkler was able to get him back to the States and working at SCH again. I was just curious if anyone knew where he may have gotten to. And did Hooters come to town?

Been in these parts of the Tri-State area all my life(Maryland, Delaware & Virginia)50 years. I hadn't' thought about Schaefer's for some time until recently when I met a man who wanted to go see Steel Drum Bands, Reggae Music, whatever kind of music, eat good food, take all age family members and enjoy the scenery, while not having to travel to far to do so. SHAEFER'S WAS THE FIRST PLACE THAT POPPED INTO MY MIND!!!
Very dissappointed to hear this old stomping ground gone :(
When did it parish? Why? Come back can't somebody else run it the way it was? Hooter's go away!!!! Way far away, you're not wanted or needed in these/those/that neck of the country! Keep the ambiance of a long ago small Mariner town alive.

Was at the "Chesapeake Inn" across the Canal two weeks ago.
The pumps are open at the former Canal House.

The big problem is the No Wake Zone is poorly posted and not enforced.

No, but there is a ramp in the basin near Chesepeake inn. It's right across the canal.

Schaeffers is currently undergoing renovations and will reopen in December 2008 is what I was told. It will be called the New Schaeffers Canal House with the same type of menu. Time will tell.

Well to let former patron os SCH know, Gunter Sunkler, former owner, passed away this past Thursday. He lived life on his terms and was a great friend. He leaves behind a wife, 6 children and 7 grandchildren. He will surely be missed.

Not to be crass, I'm very sorry about the passing of Mr.Sunkler, but does anyone know if his family or someone else will be opening the Canal House or is it gone forever. Was there years ago and never forget how good it was and how neat the atmosphere was and was planning on returning when it reopened. Best food I ever had, especially the Mousse.

I think you are speaking of Chef Clarke - he had a place in St. Michaels but has recently moved on. Schaefer's is gone thanks to the greedy second wife of Gunter who couldn't push out the son that actually ran the place fast enough - thought he might cut into her children's inheritance. I was a true landmark and it is the end of an era and a sad one at that.
