Some of my BSN students have moved to other states from New York and are actually lecturing - with a bachelor's degree - in medical-surgical nursing, and precepting independent clinicals. I have 2 masters degrees in nursing, yet I cannot be hired to teach full time in a BSN program in NY State until I finish a PhD. Nursing had better address THAT dichotomy as well!

There is state money in the form of grants and scholarships for nurses to get a Masters degree, as long as they promise to teach in MD for 2 years. The problem is that you need a sponsor from a nursing school first, and when the schools are approached, they say "how do we know what kind of teacher you will be?" and send you away. Yeah...this is the big universities (I personally approached U.M. S.O.N. as an alumni with a 3.9 gpa) as well as the community college nursing programs. Then nursing schools cry there is not enough faculty, or money to pay them. What a crock.

As a young faculty member, I want to remain committed to educating young nurses. However, it is painful to have local hospital recruiters visit our school of nursing and hear that they will be starting brand new nurses at a higher salary than I (having a masters degree and over 10 years of nursing experience). It is amazing that I have a higher earning power as a bedside nurse. What keeps me in education is the gratification of educating nurses and seeing them grow and develop. I want to see something done to compensate the hard working nursing faculty who sacrifice salary for the gratification of doing what they love to do!
