Two Killed In Wreck On Highway 31 In Athens - WHNT

Athens Police are investigating a wreck that killed two people. It happened just before noon on Highway 31 in front of the Limestone County Health Department.

I saw the wreck as it happened. There was a loud bang as if bang even conveys the correct sound. i looked up from my vehivle to see a small car fliiping up in the air at least two times. The car then fell down with a horrendous thud. Pieces of cars were flying everywhere and fell down into the roadway. If I had been 3 seconds earlier, my truck would have been hit by the flying debris. The small car that flipped landed in the median/ditch. The driver side car door was the point of impact. The victim was not moving as she was thrown into the passeneger side seat and slumped over. The other car was damaged on the front, but i could not get a real good look at it as I was on the phone with 911 at the time. Even though police had already called 911 as one officer informed me, the 911 folks still needed more information they did not have. Number of occupants, sex of the occupants, number of cars involved, and if any of the cars fliiped, were the occupants moving,ect... were some of the questions. The 911 folks did a great job in directing ambulances to the site and the police were on their game as to directing traffic and checking on the injured. Several people stopped to offer help, several of them nurses from down the street I assume. The woman in the other car kept trying to get out og her car. I yold this guy who was more near to her than I to keep her in her car. Who knows what type of head trauma she had. To see a wreck of this magnitude was very upsetting! I will pray for these folks and their family. I will say that is one has seen a Nascar racecar flip several times and land with a terrible thud would not even compare to seeing it live.

The couple had just gotten their flu shots at the health department when the crash occurred.

Were they getting the H1N1 shots? Did that contribute to the accident by having a reaction to the shot? Was it just plain carelessness? THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU.

Local media love to post photos of accidents like this....long history of it. The Huntsville Times posted the photos of my mother's fatal accident 22 years ago. Yes, it is free speech but come on, can we be a little responsible and consider the victims' families? It smacks of tabloid journalism.

I just found out that the one small car had two females in it. Where was the other one? I did not see her in the car. Anyways, please pray for the surviving lady. Keri

I think you are being a little insensitive. Do you really think we need such a descriptive account of the wreck? Suppose the victims' families are reading your comments. Do you think they want to hear about how their loved one was "thrown into the passenger side seat"? Please spare us the detail.

I agree with you, why post a pic of the victim's cars if the family does not even know about it! Very inconsiderate.

I will pray for the families of the victims in this horrendous wreck and I will pray for Kelmore! He witnessed something so tragic today and needed a release. He needed to tell this story! If you that had witnessed this accident, don't think for one minute you wouldn't want to talk about it to someone!

so many wrecks lately, please all you drivers out there be careful, whatever is distracting you,let it go, my family and your family are out on the road everyday, may peace come to the person that witnessed this tragedy , as a child at the age of 8 i witnessed a wreck on the way to birmingham and i will never forget what i saw i had dreams for years.horrible witnessing life one second then gone the next. so sorry for this whole situation.

Both women, mother and daughter, were killed in the small car. Please pray for their family.

To amanda.....If it were someone related to me, as bad as it is, I would want to know what happened. It is tragic, and I pray for the families.

A few years ago, Whnt tv did the same thing by posting photoes of a wreck that happened, but... if it wasn't for the posting Whnt did which we were watching at the time, we noticed that the wreck involved our son, and we rushed out!! we actually seen the news, before we got the news about our son with a phone call.
