I have an extremely different view than "Another Student" from California. Shoot...maybe we were even in the same grade. I'm not sure. As a boy I am proud to say that Michael Benham taught the gospel and presented sermans that related to our daily lives. There was always a positive message within his teachings.
As an alter boy, yes, you had to go into the room to put on the white robes. Never did I experience or witness anything inappropriate going on from Father Benham. He was professional each day. It wasn't a good experience to see him struggle with alcohol, but at times he didn't seem like a happy person. Just as he struggled with alcohol, he seemed to struggle to find meaning and happiness each day.
As I grew up, Father Benham was someone who would encourage me to be a better student, stand up for myself, and he even spoke to one of the teachers who treated me poorly at times. After he spoke to the woman, I did get dirty looks from her, but things definitely changed in terms of how I was treated. All I can do is thank Father Michael C. Benham for all the good he did for my friends, family, and for all the support he gave to me throughout my elementary and secondary school career.
