A few hundred bucks? Sad. The fine was still probably less than the cost of properly caring for the animals. Not much of a deterrent.

This is not this person's only violation. This LA Times article from last July reports an eye-witness account of him not stunning a sheep prior to slaughtering it. Supposedly, he was charged with that in a separate case since that, too, is illegal as well as inhumane. So, hopefully his troubles will continue, and being a small operation, he will go out of business. Unfortunate for any employees he has in this economy, but his unconscionable actions created the situation.

Oh, btw, yes, I eat meat. Love it. Life subsists on life. That does not mean I support inhumane treatment of animals.

If you're really interested in this guy getting more than a slap on the wrist (I am), I suggest calling smaller local markets (Shopper's Corner, Staff of Life, New Leaf, etc) and asking where they get their meat. If this place is on the list, tell them to stop getting it from there or you'll consider shopping elsewhere--and not just for meat. Don't bother with supermarkets; they get supplies from much larger slaughterhouses. There's more you can do, but that would take more effort. This is quite simple. Local stores may not carry his stock or may decide to stop on their own, but there's by no means any guarantee of that. Consumers actually do have clout locally, especially with smaller stores.

this is the typical care that animals recieve from their Latino caregivers.... paying for a vet would never occur to them, their machismo would never allow it. I have seen numerous animals around Watsonville and Salinas that are starving and sick who receive no care, I have called animal services and also throw feed over the fences, the really sickening thing is if the 'owner' catches on that someone else will feed the poor animal, he will stop whatever little care he was giving.
If you want to really see something that will make you sick to your stomach, go watch the Mexican rodeo crap that goes on in the arena on Castroville Blvd at Elkhorn Rd, the charro practice where they force a horse into a gallop and then rope their front legs and then jerk the legs out from under the horse, this usually results in broken legs, broken necks and pain and terror for the horse, the Mexicans insist that this is their rodeo 'heritage', pretty cool, hun?
Thank you for calling animal services about the violations; I hope you do about the rodeos, too. Thing is, I have family in PA--right around Amish country even--and some of the things people in that area do to animals there makes me absolutely sick, both on the farms and their own rodeos. My relatives don't have farm animals, but some of the things they say indicate a pretty low attitude toward animals or the least bit of concern of them feeling pain. I've only seen Caucasians when I've visited Western PA, so let's get off the racism, shall we?

Wow, I had no idea that these small slaughterhouses even existed. That's disgusting --there's obviously no way to keep a close enough eye on them. I'm sure inhumane practices occur all the time. And what about Mad Cow Disease? Do they really trust people like this to monitor for that? And this guy didn't lose his license to operate after this flagrant abuse of his livestock was discovered? Unbelievable. Really.

This guy is a piece of sh*t. Just because we eat cows, pigs, etc does not justify such callous, subhuman treatment of animals. Please let me have this mother f**ker for a few months so I can lock him up treat him with the same consideration he has shown to the animals and let's just let him starve to death he deserves no better.

Great job Animal Services Authority! In many places this would never have been a case. Animals that live in Santa Cruz are very lucky. I am saddened that you have to deal with critics.....

Wow, it took this long for this guy just to pay less than I pay for rent? That doesn't sound like justice to me, although all I really care about is the animals, I'm glad they were saved.

Typical Watsonville trash.

pretty unbelievable that you can starve animals to death and just get a small fine. he should have the same done to him. put him in a field and give him a little bread and let him starve to death. mexicans have no regard for animals, in general.
Some Mexicans are truly compassionate toward animals, but generally speaking you're right, they're sadistic toward animals. They actually demand that Americans legalize animal-fighting because it's "part of their culture."

And that may very well come to pass, if we don't stop the illegal alien hordes from pouring in here, where they arrogantly gloat about their outbreeding the despised gringos.

Anyway, "Efrain Toledo Martinez, 54, will pay $868 in restitution to Animal Services and $190 in court costs." Is that puny fine going to pay for more than a tiny fraction of the costs of going after this animal abuser? If anything, that sends the message that even if you get caught, you'll just get your wrist slapped.

What's the immigration status of this guy? We have a right to know!

Listen up Einstein,

Just because we have degenerate criminals in this country already doesn't mean we have to import more.

That's one of the dumbest arguments for open borders, and that's really saying something.

My simple amigo,

Unlike your simple amigos, I never steal your names and make obscene racist semi-literate slanderous comments with them, like you simple amigos do with my name.

Apparently you think it's cute when your simple amigos do those kind of things, but you get all bent out of shape at my relatively tame satire.

And after all that, you snivelpusses have Topix delete my comments. I've never asked that any comments be removed, no matter how threatening or degenerate.

You are one pathetic wimp, but I don't blame you for that. Your hypocrisy's what is so ludicrous.

Daily Horoscope for December 10

Capricorn

Someone is in a finger-wagging mood and unfortunately they seem to be concentrating on you! Maybe they think you've fallen from grace for some reason, or perhaps you're simply the only person who happens to be around when they feel like letting off steam. Do your best not to fall into an equally critical and disgruntled mood, because it will soon make you feel wretched.
