why do people hate the oilfield?

You seem to have a few misconceptions about what I do for a living. I'm not attempting to glorify my profession by no means, but it is an essential part of a standard of living we have all become accustomed to. I work, on average, 100+ hours a week. My company does not run shifts. We are there until we are done and then it's on to the next one. And in reply to your comment about us being "uneducated" and "5th grade dropouts" is literally showing your ignorance on the subject. Yes, there are stupid people out here. But there are stupid people in every walk of life. And as in every walk of life, those people don't amount to much. They remain the laborers. We can't all be chiefs. As for the people that move up the ladder, most are extremely educated in mathematics and, believe it or not, physics and chemestry. They have to be or people die. As for myself, I have a bachelors degree in graphic design and also could have worked in any state. I was smart enough to go get the money while it's there and have a fall back plan. I have one kid and, yes, my wife is a stay at home mom. That's the most beneficial part of my job. As for food stamps, never been on them. We've always just made it work even at our worst. Hopefully this will enlighten you just a bit on the subject. Whether you change your view or not, I could care less. But if you're going to hate something, at least be remotely knowledgeable about it.

Because it's a job that requires you to do NOTHING! ZERO labor! Just a bunch of fat, lazy rednecks who were too stupid to stay in school and make something of themselves, so they dropped out and decided to make a living of driving a pickup all day and sleep for 12 hours in between that. That's pretty much all the oilfield is! Eat, sleep, drive, and bullish!t for a week straight before going back home to their stay at home wife and 20 kids (who's probably also ripping off the government for food stamps when their husbands already make enough money) So yeah! The oilfield is easy and laborless. Just sit around all day and gain an extra 50 pounds by the end of the day from doing nothing.

Hell most of them are two timers. The way they flirt in Restaurants with the waitresses! Don't try to tell me they aren't getting something for the size of tips they leave! A little nookie on the side is what they get and why the hell the waitress would even consider having sex with such filthy Pieces of Trash. They should have a rule you must clean up to come in here and eat! IF they don't respect themselves we should force them to if they want to eat. Plus drug tests that is a laugh and a half!!! Sure stay clean for 3 weeks pass the drug test then do all the drugs you want and brag I passed the drug test! Also don't give me the random test crap either. As long as you don't act Goofy around the bosses you can get away with anything!! I know I used to be one of you pieces of trash till I got out of the oilfield and cleaned myself up! You are all nasty dirty druggy two timing pieces of trash and you know it!!!!
If you were a dope head, piece of oilfield trash... you were never one of us, you were one of "them" 26 years in the oilfield... Never cheated on my wife, never done drugs... Seen alot of men do it, But they would be acting like that no matter what they did for their money. They are not the oilfield, they are the oilfield's problem children. It's sad that you believe the trash you are spilling.

So true!!! A lot of the guys go home at the end of the day and then show up the next morning in the same dirty clothes!!!!! They stink!!! From the looks of their greasy hair, they must be bathing in ditchwater, if at all.
Let me see if I might shed some light on this for you.... We have 2 sets of clothes... WORK clothes, and "Go home clothes" We work with drilling mud, Oil based mud, Crude, Condensate, Diesel, and at times Gasoline. They get permeated into the clothes. If you washed them everytime they got dirty, you would wash them in 2 in a week. We wear dirty clothes, because we have a dirty job. We typically are not clean people when we are on hitch, it does not lessen our right, or need to eat. And on THAT note... If there is an oilfield hand in a restaurant, I highly doubt he's a roughneck, most definately a service hand. They carry the brunt of the dirtiest work we do on the rigs. They sometimes have to work on several rigs per day, and incase you didn't notice, they aren't pulling mobile showers behind those trucks. They haul ass from rig to rig, doing their jobs, with screaming company men that are on deadlines, and waiting on them. Dirt is a fact of life in the oilfield, wee do it to supply you people with the oil you so desperately need, and we make a shit-ton of money doing it. Maybe you should say thank you, and shut your pie-holes. Or man the fuck up, and go to work with them for a day.

You guys are getting so trolled by one man. Noticed that these "people" all seem to be from Yukon?... An odd, disproportional, amount of "haters" I would think.

The oilfield is a great place to work. The only industry that I have ever seen where your work ethic and hard work directly equate into value and advancement.

Now, after five years in the field, I sit behind one of your comfortable A/C filled offices managing a multi-million dollar manufacturing facility. I work only four days a week and make more than a degree wielding engineer does in their first ten years.

So enjoy paying your student loans every month into your 40's. When you make that payment I hope you think of me and remember that a high school drop out knows more than you ever will and that companies will continue to pay me more than you to have that knowledge.

I understand there are some bad apples, so to speak, but there are even more that are good people just trying to provide for their families. They go and do physical labor that the majority wouldn't think of doing. No matter what the weather conditions, they're out there missing birthdays, holidays, ball games, and family time in general to get a product that everybody uses. I just don't get it.
The drivers in West texas driver to near the yellow line and almost play chicken with the other drivers. They drive too slow and the pickups of the oil companies drive 90 to 100 miles an hour. I have seen some talking on the phone or texting while grossing many thousand pounds. They are killing people out here and its not a game. Most of the trucks are bad drivers out here. That's why I hate the oil field. They also drive right behind each other so you have to pass 2 or 3 of them sometimes. I drive with these trucks weekly and sometimes daily.
I am reporting their driving to the DOT it is so bad.
My ex husband is a truck driver so I know they can be safer. But they don't care.

Not to mention we sometimes travel in groups because we are told to do things that way. Kinda makes for a chaotic situation when you've got trucks straggling onto location 10-15 minutes apart. Or if the trucks show up in the wrong order. People hate what they don't understand. I agree with that an I'll add that there are lots of people in this area that hate us because they can't handle the workload or they're jealous that we are so well paid for our time.

You guys are sooo full of it. There is not one of you oilfield workers "doing it so people can drive a car or heat their homes". You are doing it for your own paycheck. But go ahead and keep deluding yourself if it makes you feel like your life is worth more than others.

Driller were the biggest assholes of all followed by company men don't all me a worm either I worked in the worst weather imaginable at the hardest dirtiest work there can possibly be and all over Texas Okla Wyoming been there done that had enuff. Why look back on ur life a realize u gave it to company men who don't give a shit about u or ur family? Wow there are some in happy people. But most are wrong I have been in the oil patch for about 9 years I done fracing for most of it but last few years been hauling oil I work 12-14 hrs per day and make about 85-90k a year. I work hard for my family. I have wife and little boy. I'm able to pay all my bills and put money in bank. I'm stocking away nice amounts into my retirement 401k account in which is company matched! I have good insurance and benefits. And I am in no way shape or form what you call "oilfield trash" I work hard while I'm up here and go home to my family and shower them with love! My wife can come up here any time she wants surprise visits are no problems because she won't catch another woman in my room and she won't catch me trying to get some on the side. Not all oilfield workers are trash! You can't beat the money in the oil field and if it want for oil field this town and state would be suffering. So don't really care what you think, and I am college educated with management degree and nearly have all my loans paid off, so won't be long till I get that desk job 150-200k whole you are still making 30k and broke!

Because of who works in the Oilfield 3 examples (1)don't want to go to college and get a job? Then go to the oilfield thus they end up uneducatedand unsocialable.(2)Can't get a job anywhere else go to the oilfield thus unsocialable and probably again uneducated again and (3) Prisons back east let the con's out and give them a bus ticket to Elk City and say go get a job in the Oilfield thus a lot of them are Cons and unsocialable. Not all fall into the catagories but enough do that you don't want to fool with any of them. These are 3 good reasons people hate the oilfield and who works in them.
Your comment is false. First there are a lot of men with college degrees who are in this industry. Lots who out of high school went right to work and a few years later are in supervisor positions and foreman positions. There is tons of mathematics and formulas that go with the job, a lot harder than sitting in a algebra college class riding dads bill waiting for Thursday to run and get drunk. And last the amount of prior military who work in the industry is massive, so respect the field brother...oh and we make more money than most and work half a year...

Oilfield doesn't make you a cheater your personal morals or lack their of make you a cheater. Where some companies have dignity other hire just anyone. I have met oilfield hands that are very respectful and I have met other that make me sick. Its not the job that makes you cheat its a choice. If you go to the bars and other imoral places its bound to happen. If you work and don't go to those places you are less likely to step out.

OMG.... I just ran across this forum on accident. Wow.... I don't even know where to start! This forum is like a group of special needs children. I would make a strong bet that there is not a college degree to be found among any of you! First of all, the "oil field" consists of two classes of people... professionals with degrees, and idiots who wish they had a degree. The idiots will be the FIRST to be laid off. They always have been and they always will be. Like it or not, LAYOFFS ARE COMING!!!! Also, when did the oilfield become a respectable place to work?! It ISN'T!!!!!!! The oilfield is a stinking, dirty, shameful, hazardous, SH*THOLE!!!!! And the people who work in it are the bottom of the social ladder!!! That is the absolute truth, and it has been since the first hole was drilled. Anyone who would actually, freely admit to working in the oilfield without feeling a sense of failure and shame is a totally misguided moron who knows NOTHING of the history of this outrageously awful industry. Hey IDIOTS, that's why the smart people either OWN the wells and mineral rights or they work in other RESPECTABLE areas of business.... like medicine, finance, science or law. Oilfield work is the scraps or leftovers... So.... Have fun working in the "sewer of the business world". Hahahaha! LOSERS!

Coming from someone that I would be willing to bet makes maybe a fifth of what some idiots make in the oil field. Can you say that you make 1500 daily, 200k a year, or more? Now that kind of money doesn't sound very stupid and bottom feeder to me. I know more people without degrees than with degrees making this money. Also, next time you are using your phone, car, or just about anything else think of all the bottom feeding workers and the crap industry that helped make all that shit for you.
