well, last time i was in spurs the bartender looked like she was so spun her eyes were gonna pop out of her head!! when i want a nice quiet time of playin pool and socializing with my friends i like the endzone, and i dont see any more druggies in there than i do at walmart any given day!! lol wake up, they are all over this town these days! i do have to agree about dirty drunks at the pitstop, but i must say those 'dirty' drunks are also probably druggies! and yes, the crowd at the palace is young, but it is the only place to go to 'let down your hair' these days. and for the record, there are totally different (and drug free) people running that place than when it was shut down months ago-and now they have stand up comedy night on thursdays with no cover!!
Please honey don't talk bad about people or try and make others look bad! Sure you wasn't looking in the mirrow?????

Love to read some stories by folks with institutional memories of the Elk City bar scene from the 80's on. When the boom was still "in bloom", I've heard that gambling on the pool tables was huge where businesses & land & other major assets were won & lost in a night (perhaps things remain the same), that workers flocked to Elk City & even lived in the parks & packed the bars given shotages in housing, and that many church-going innocents were seduced into becoming regular bar scene fixtures.

Any stories about the "then v now" Elk City bar scene?

Surprised that no one can color in the tone & tenor of the 80's Elk City nightlife scene; would have thought that local posters would have memories of the bar scene back then....

What about the one in the old Holiday Inn, or whatever it is called now? I've heard it is okay, anybody know or have any dirt on it?

During the 70's there were about 20 watering holes in Elk City, everybody did all the business they could handle, lots of pool action at the Oasis club on W Broadway, there was always somebody willing to make a major wager. I had an oilfield joint called the Red Dragon, S main & Hiway 6 in the old Quality Inn.

Bethni, on the gambling/pool side of the fence, I have several old "friends" who are (or have been) distinguished TV players and then there are the others -- the road players -- I've encountered in passing. Many of these hustlers have fascinating stories where breezed in & out of the oil patches at one time or another & scored BIG TIME. But like so many pool players, they blew scores of thousands of dollars quickly & were left with little or nothing to show for their efforts.
I've also heard stories from Elk City people about business owners (I heard about one businessman) in the 80's losing the entire equity in his various businesses during one night in a local bar which spawned horrible events in his life afterwards.
Coming from an area where there's -0- like the booms & busts in your region, I am very curious about the relatively large gambling sensibilities people seem to have had when money flowed like water & wasn't appreciated to the degree it probably is right now. On the other hand, perhaps people from your region are predisposed to gamble high regardless of the economy whether it's on a pool table, card table or any other venue.
Without divulging personal information, I would love to read some of your informed, specific rememberences of the bar scenes back in the day, the high fliers & the church goers who were seduced into a nightlife lifestyle because the money was lavishly spread around & the temptations were (perhaps) greater.

Every bar in Elk City has druggies go to it let's be real about that. The palace sucks let's keep it real so many immature people go there they kick people out then let them right back in really showing they mean buisness. They must be desperate for buisness that owner is a joke. If you fight in there you should be barred for at the very least two weeks if not longer. They are so desparate for buisness.
