While increasing taxes is not a popular option, and increasing sin taxes defeats its purpose many times, a
fair simple tax called a head tax for the next 5 years for ALL people residing in the Comm of Pa, no exceptions, men women and children. The 2009 population was 12,604,767, just imagine if $10 per individual were collected? Thats $126,047,670, that would be used to LOWER deficit, not spend elsewhere!
In just 5 years alone using the current population, the state would collect $630,238,350 to pay off debt and put in the rainy day fund once again.
There are no quick fixes, but a look towards the future with disciplined spending by the State is a beginning.

this comment is for Tim , Tim about all I can say is take a shorter term on your mortgage. If you do the math the reason you are paying three times the value is you took a thiry year term . ALso if you think it is so easy to gathr up hundreds of thousands and lend it to people you truly dont know well then by all means so so yourself. I dont think you would lend your sister 200,000 . The payback is for the risk , and Tim you are a rich no matter how great you think you are. ALso the average life of a mortgage now is about 5 years so think of it as a rental with a tax federal tax break. Thanks

Unfortunately the only waste I see is at the top. We are paying too much money for a politicians who cannot do their jobs properly. There are too many politicians and not enough workers today in government. When you look at the amount of people you have working on a budget and other special interest nonsense it’s a total waste of taxpayer dollars. Look at all the salaries being paid for nothing. Do you really think anyone should be paid this amount of money for what they produce? Can you imagine if the average state worker spent all day arguing about how to get their job done with other co-workers and accomplishing nothing by the end of the day, what kind of services would we receive? Yet the political fat threatens to take their jobs away when they cannot do their own job. Is that fair? The politicians expect these people to produce at a much lower salary while they take a whole year to put a budget together. We elect political leaders to do a job not to hire consulting firms to teach them how to do their jobs. Does anyone realize how much we pay these consulting firms to tell us what we cannot accomplish in the end? It would make you sick if you knew. It's time to replace all the dead weight with new people. Get involved this November, let's get all the dead weight out before it's too late. Get people in office who know how to fix problems without counting on others. After all, this is what we pay them to do.

i agree with deek, they should put a head tax on,then we would hit all the free loadersw out there who don't work and pay taxes.also they should cut back on welfare.take more people off the rolls, just because they have kids dosen't mean they should keep on getting welfare, that money could be put to better use in the budget.no new taxes for the working people, find a way to tax the free loaders.

I suggest that the legislators earn the same benefits as the state workers instead of all of the bells and whistles they get for a short term in office, including no pay while all of the back and forth goes on in Harrisburg.

The public wants to cut cut cut on the state workers pensions and benefits, they dont think the state should match pensions and such, but the state is the employer and just like many employers do, they should offer something to keep qualified workers in this state.

I am so saddened by what has happened to PA. I used to be proud to call it home. My family and I are seriously considering moving to another state where things are a little less corrupt.

Spend the money to drug test all of those on unemployment and welfare - if they fail - cut them off! Money saved on free loaders will surely outweigh the cost of the drug testing. And hey.. the legistlators in Harrisburg dont do anything, so let them be the ones doing the testing!!

The state should have to operate under the same guide lines
that volunteer organizations with a small games of chance
licenes are required to do. The law enacted in 1982 when passed set limits on payouts etc. Could our state legislators operate on the same confines these organizatons
are required to do so. The casinos have taken moneies from
the local people who put money back into the community.
For purchases for fire equipment, wheel chairs, hurricane
relief, and the Campbelltown, tornado. Where this fire company provided food and housing for people affected. And
lost their ability to have their normal fund raisers during this period of time. What will be the cost of your
taxes on real estate if these fund raisers get shut out
by the casnio's? Who audits the casino's to see if they
are on the up and up with their reports of cash taken in
and what the state gets??

Does anyone in government realize what they are doing to the citizens they work for? They allow medical, insurance, utility, and even the government itself to rip us off. They vote themselves and everyone else who works for the government wages and benefits while our wages and benefits go down the drain. Property taxes are raised at will while hundreds of families lose their homes because they can't afford the taxes anymore. Only one state in the union doesn't allow Democrat/Republican bickering that only hurts the citizens who they are supposed to help. Work for us and modify the money drain you cause yourself!

Gov. Ed Rendell has shown his mafia extortion side at every turn on the budget road. He can't seem to do anything with the tax money available except build his and all of his buddy’s political lifestyle. We need accountability for every dollar spent and no raises or bonuses for anyone that isn’t honest!

As far as I know PA has only a photo Drivers License.
We could reduce the cost of the Photo Drivers License sign by 33% if we make them read Drivers License. Use of the word Photo implies that there are non photo Licenses available.

it's really simple. cut the size of the legislature by 50%. we simply have too many. thencut their perks. make the elected serve just 2 years, then they're gone.
