The Press Republican - Champlain Bridge demolition delayed

There are 21 comments on the www.pressrepublican.com story from Dec 22, 2009, titled The Press Republican - Champlain Bridge demolition delayed. In it, www.pressrepublican.com reports that:

Emergency management officials have delayed the Champlain Bridge demolition until Monday.

The New York State Department of Transportation and the Vermont Agency of Transportation postponed the blasting, which was supposed to take place today(er, tomorrow-Wednesday), until 10 a.m. Monday because safety issues, caused by ice on the lake and bitter cold temperatures, have slowed preparation work.

People will still be able to watch the demolition of the bridge Monday from the boat launch in Port Henry, where a few chemical toilets will be available. An alternate viewing location will be open at Bulwagga Bay Park in Moriah, but there are no bathroom facilities there. On the Vermont side, Route 125 in Addison, Vt., is the designated viewing area. Drivers should take Route 125 from Route 22A (one-way for that day) in Addison, Vt., then Route 17 (also one-way for a day) to leave. Only media and essential staff will be permitted at the Crown Point Historic Site, which is just outside the 1,000-foot safety zone.

A live broadcast of the bridge demolition will be available on the Internet, courtesy of DOT, at www.nysdot.gov/lakechamplainbridge

if ice was the real reason for the delay, does someone actually think we are going to get a heat wave and all the ice is going to melt ?

Ice, you are so right. What's ice got to do with it, you're blasting the bridge not the water. They just aren't ready and don't want to admit it.

I hear the demo crew doesn't want to start it as they want to be home for Christmas (can't blame them and who knows how long this will take). They are from out of state. It's a little easier to blame on weather than that? Hello! If that is the reason than just say it; people would certainly understand?

why didn't they just let people continue to drive over it until it fell in? I mean that would save alot of money for having to pay a construction crew

The temp's supposed to go into the 40s this weekend -- that's a big difference from the single digits and teens we've had unseasonably early and for an extended time this year.

Just my 2 cents: the state should have shopped for a movie maker who could use the rare footage of a bridge being blown up to contribute money and publicity and offset some of the cost.

The crew is here that is doing this....They are having issues getting barges in place to get ready for the demolition due to the ice. Would you rather have this done right or half assed like everything else. People will b itch about anything

I have pictures of the bridge when it was partially built on January 30th, 1929. It was the day my dad was born! It shows men out on the ice, under the bridge, pulling on a rope or a cable of some sort. It was taken from the pier by the light house by my grandfather! It was completed in September of that same year,1929. It's an awsome photo. Really neat to see. I'll hate to see the bridge gone! Oh well, that's progress, and lack of maintenance!

The statement "taken with an expensive camera" should be your first clue these pictures are crap. Its not the camera, its the person working the camera! A$$.

It cost almost 250 grand to hire a group from Idaho to blow the bridge up when almost any of our local convenience store owners could have landed that bridge right on barges... ready to be shipped... now we have to fish it out...Go fish

Is there any truth to the State of NY asking the company from Idaho for a bid to blow up Port Henry so they can start that town over?
