How convenient! The Broad Street Bridge is adjacent to that address --- all the winos will be able to buy their Thunderbird and then camp out at underneath the bridge.

I am sure that there will be more people applying. It will be interesting to see how many more people apply and who is chosen.
I do not see why the Elizabethton City Council needs to do a lottery --- issuing a new liquor licenses should be heavily weighed on several factors:

1) access to capital/funding;
2) proven and on-going success in the operation of a retail store within Elizabethton;
3) passing all of the state background requirements, and;
4) owner residing within the city of Elizabethton.

Of the candidates listed here (my assumption is that this list is accurate), I would support the issuing licenses to:

Roy B Hyder location to be at 825 N Lynn Ave (although I do not know where this fellow resides) and Dr. Armstrong (although he lacks the sufficient Elizabethton retail business experience...

I saw in the Star today that Carl R. Nidiffer and Charles G Bridges had applied for Liquor license and a man from J.C. Billy Chappell also.
Billy Chappell is Marshall Nave's son-in-law, married to his daughter Terri. He lives on Boone Lake. I don't know if the applicants have to reside in Carter County.

I dont think they have to live in Elizabethton.
I think they all should get one and let the market sort it out

I think the ppl that did get granted the liscenses is a recipe for trouble. Does anyone know the history behind Marshall Nave? I know some of it but I am curious to know the details that I don't especially since his kin will be running a liquor store in our town

The city council will decide whom by financial status, building location, etc. etc.
When they narrow that down to 4 or 6 individuals they will then do a lottery drawing, no one is guaranteed a license.
It's about time, it's overdue, we're almost in the 21st century here in Elizabethton...and no it won't infringe on anyones Meth Market.....
I don't think they did a lottery drawing...I think they "picked"

You are correct the lottery was not used but they all reviewed business plans, financial ability and other items necessary to own and operate a business. They didn't pick they nominated and voted , it's what they were elected to do

#33 Feb 1, 2013
They may have nominated and voted and reviewed their business plans but I can guarantee that the "it's who you know" system played the biggest role in determining who was picked in the end! Wonder which one will be the first to get into some sort of "trouble"?

I disagree the other candidates except Roy Hyder were all from Johnson City so why would we want anyone from there to get a Elizabethton license?

Roy was only nominated once.....if it was the who you know everyone had an opportunity to speak against any and all candidates but nobody did

#35 Feb 1, 2013
Of course they aren't gonna speak against a "friend" they just voted for them making it unneccessary to speak against anyone!

The only fair way would have been to draw names, but then the ones who had ALREADY been chosen may not have been the names that were drawn. This is CARTER COUNTY!

Everyone got up an bragged an told about how grand they were the board bragged how armstrong was their dentist an how some were givin them their business to put in an alarm system mr hyder humbly stood an told what he had to say an thanked the board an ur rite it was a who u kn an u r a shoe in I see some board members may be on their way out next election maybe mr hyder should have had his daughter do the talking but then that not what the app said the person applying stands up an says why they deserve it just like carter county who threw the most money an lined their pockets

Again I ask would you rather someone from Johnson City get a license or somebody who at least owns property and pays taxes here? Would you rather the person from Johnson City take and spend their money back in Johnson City?

Yea they all had to get up and give their reasons "why" they would be the best candidate for the license, which was a little cheeses but I assume that's the only way to give them a chance to plea their case.

The council were not the ones speaking in favor of or against, it was the "publics" chance to say they were for or against a candidate.

It doesn't matter how they did it there was no way to make everybody happy.

I'm just glad we finally get liquor and all those lost tax dollars we've been losing to Johnson City for so many years!

I believe the people posting their opinions in here have already been in a bottle. I can't read half of this mess. I think everybody needs to quit bitching about the crooks in Carter County....hasn't changed in a hundred years and won't anytime soon.

In my humble opinion, the person who lived in Johnson City should have been ineligible. They should have been required to live in Elizabethton. Also, if any of the applicants had ever had a DUI they should have been disqualifed. They already knew who would get the licenses. For Curt Alexander to have anything to do with this is ridiculous. He got caught with his "pants down." Carter County is a laughing stock, always will be!
