There's been something I have wondered about for years. How in the world does Grindstaff have so much money just by owning an average dealership. I've heard stories that he is a huge drug dealer. Is there any evidence to back up those claims? I don't know any car salesman around here that buy a 30 million dollar home.

Rumors floated he's a dealer, but rumors have floated that several people are dealers...... it's called Carter County Gossip, they don't like the face he actually has something, they would rather him be up on the hill getting his welfare check rather than glad about the money and jobs he generates.

Ever seen Sherwood's home? Bill Gattons home or how much he donates money to various places.. Grindstaff had a lot of realestate at one time he may not now but he did.

I have heard that for the past 4 or 5 years. We all know that he and a few others, such as a prominant roofer and herb and metal owner paid for mathes to move up to carter county from Florida to run for sheriff.I have also heard that the dope came to carter county through Florida.Coincidence maybe or maybe not. That is the rumors we all have heard. No most people are not jealous of him,but we also think that if you have heard enough rumors for a long period of time, that some of them could very well be true. Most rumors just die down after awhile, these haven't.From what I hear after all the drug bust the sheriff has made here lately, drugs are just as prevalent now as they were before the arrests.Word on the street is don't trust any of the good ole boys(politicians or business men) in Carter county.Remember when one of them comes to pat you on the back, they are looking for that soft spot to put the knife in.

Actually, nondealer, the rumors have been around a LOT longer than 4 or 5 years.... try 25 or 30 and it seems to just be CC gossip. Folks that collect a check every month HATE the idea that someone can get rich with hard work. No, Im not one of his customers or employees or in any way associated with him. In fact, I dont even particularly like the guy for other reasons.

Your claim that Mathes came from FL and drugs are coming from FL not being a coincidence? That is one of the WEAKEST pieces of innuendo I have ever heard. Where do ALL the drugs on the east coast come from? Florida for the most part. It has been that way for 40 years.

As for your claim that if gossip foes around long enough, it must be true? Mark Twain (I think it was) said "A vicious lie will get around the world before the truth gets out of bed in the morning"

If ya got facts, hit us with facts.

is it just coincidence that when mr grindstaff stands up to ed and his school board that he becomes a target here. hmmmm i really don't believe in coincidence. for those who are envious of his financial position hard work and long hours could see you in the same place. but don't ever forget that no one owes you a check especially not hard working tax paying americans.

That's very true. All the monthly check cashers can't stand it when somebody actually makes something of themselves. A LOT of the older people are like that too though. They dont want anyone to get "above their raising". You gotta aim high or you'll never get anywhere.

As for him being a dealer, its been circulating for 25-30 years. He fu*#ed a LOT of people when he bought the dealership. But it was a lot of people who sh*t on him in the past. That's where a lot of this gossip comes from. No matter how anyone looks at it, he's wealthy, has anything he wants, and doesn't mooch off the government. Not too bad a lifestyle now is it?

Independent, while I was surfing this website I decided to click on this thread. You seem to flip flop on some of your views on some other threads which makes me think you maybe a politician.I don't like Grindstaff either.I had a person tell me that he got the dealership from Mr.Bunton through a poker game that took place.I don't know I wasn't there,I was in some other part of the world protecting your butt, but the person swore it to be the truth. As far as being a check casher, that makes me one doesn't it?After over 30 years in the military I damn sure think I deserve that check from the taxpayer of this country since I am one of the 1% that serves the 99% that won't make a f---ing sacrifice. All I can say from your rebuttal of nondealer then since the sheriff worked down in Florida and all the drugs coming to the east coast from Florida then he wasn't doing too good of a job,but that is another thread and I would like to leave that alone.

Well said. Grindstaff has stepped on alot of people on his way up so he is not the good ole boy made it good. he is the good ole boy that stepped as he needed too, to get what he wanted. one wife = two daughters, second wife = one son, third wife = best one he has had, couldn't be happier according to story in newspaper. Don't know him do know him when I see him, know of his first wife, know that she had problems but she appears to have been a hard worker, too bad some of that good old riches couldn't have gone her way. Bet wife number two got her share when that relationship ended
People move when he approaches the schoolboard etc. BECAUSE he donates alot of money to programs. Money does TALK. We all listen to and read the gossip, just how much is gossip and how much is truth who knows. probably alittle of each and alot of hot air mixed in. Independent, you are good most of the time but..........

Mr old drunk, they kind of heaped all of the check cashers into the same pile didn't they? Some of us may have earned that check. So in every group there are exceptions, don't you think?Still I enjoy voicing my opinion just like everyone else does.

The "check cashers" I was referring to are those people that have for generations sat on their ass and waited for that monthly check. It has almost become an artform anymore. Especially the people on "disability" that find a way to work, sometimes manual labor, for cash under the table. Nice if you can get it. A monthly check for doing nothing and a tax free income.

It was in no way, shape or fashion referring to anyone in the armed forces. They deserve a HECK of a lot more than they get.

As for the poker game. I am familiar with the individuals that used to own bunton chevrolet. they were also heavily invested in developing Quail Hollow which was WAY ahead of its time. About the time that happened, if you folks remember, Carternomics helped push interest rates to 22% and the real estate market collapsed. The banks ended up with a lot of properties and Bunton and his partners had to sell off a bunch of stuff at fire sale prices to stay afloat.

Grindstaff had cash available and picked up the dealership for way under market.

The poker game tale is just a tale. There were some pretty high stakes games around that time. I was at a couple but didnt play (too rich for me ok college students dont have that kinda cash) but the biggest pot I ever heard of was 10,000 or so. Hardly enough to buy a car dealership.

Some time ago a veteran who works in city goverment and is retird from a goverment job ask me what I thought about him filing a claim for PTSD .The V A told him he didnt have service connected PTSD he didnt agree . Some will work on the job for 40 years and retire and all of a sudden they are ill. I told him that I was sure that I knew plenty of veterans with PTSD who would gladly exchange the check for a clean mind and few sleepless nights. You are correct theres allways exceptions .

More than one person in that golfing, card-playing group have made it big. Now they are just old drunks. You can not buy extra time. Lots of these local car dealers have went to jail from dealing with this man. If you look at the number of small dealers in the county, you can realize that this county can not possibly support the amount that is here. Could be the old shell game. If you keep moving things around you can not follow the money?
Also if you control the law inforcement then it is not so hard to control the competition. And if you own a string of hotels from Charleston up to the Tri-Cities then you have a safe house to run any illegal activity, drugs, women, anything. If you have a life size nude picture of yourself? Just kinda sick?
I think anyone who works hard and becomes a success is to be applauded. I think anyone who does it outside the law is a crook and should be punished. Only each person knows. When they are alone late at night and have their thoughts to keep them company that is when the truth comes out.

I'll buy that could be...... the most important thing someone can be able to do is like the person they see when they look in the mirror in the morning.

Cause, if YOU dont like that person, doggone sure that very few others will.

Independent do you like what you see in the morning? Would you like to change some things? Do any of us really like what looks back at us? I do know a few people past and present that I think would be proud to see themself but they are very few and very far apart.

I didnt say I wouldnt change anything. Heck, everyone could use some improvement. But, all in all, yes, I DO like the person that looks back in the mirror every morning.

He's far from perfect but he busts his but for his customers and refuses to shaft anyone even if doing so costs him money.

All in all, not a bad thing to be.

Independent, while I applaud you for having the integrity in your business of doing your customers right,I must question your memory.Carter was president from 1977-1981.I remember back in late 1985 I bought a vehicle from Mr.Bunton.The interest rate at that time was around 9%.The Reaganomics was when the interest rate went up to over 20%,not the Carternomics (that I have never heard of).Anyway the high interest rates didn't last long, only up to 1983 or so,then they started going back down, which is why in 1985 I could buy a vehicle for about 9% interest.Mr. Bunton had that dealership well past 1985,which is well past the years of the high interest rates that occured under the Reaganomics era.I know it is hard to remember back that far.As post #17 said when you control law enforcement.....
