Every month to a month-and-a-half I wake up on Monday morning, jump into the shower and discover that, once again, the water is shut off. I live in Carter County and get my water supplied (or on these Mondays, NOT supplied) by the Elizabethton Water Dept. When I call to ask why there is no water at my home I'm always told the same thing, "The system is being flushed". Then I ask why the Water Dept doesn't contact its customers to let them know there will be no water, I'm always told the same thing, "It was posted in yesterday's (Sunday's) Elizabethton Star". When I say I don't subscribe to the Star, Ms. Nidifer or one of her minions then tells me if I want to be "kept in the loop" I should get the Star. No, I will not be forced into subscribing to the local paper. "There are ways to let customers know there will be no water", I suggest. For instance, when there is going to be a disruption in my trash pickup by Waste Management, I get a pre-recorded message a few days earlier stating, "Due to next week's Holiday, your trash pickup will be delayed by one day". That tells me that (in my case) my trash will be picked up on Thursday instead of Wednesday during the week of the holiday. Most times when I mention this to someone at the water department I am cut off before I am finished with, "Sir, certainly you don't expect me to call every Elizabethton Water customer". NO! I think the Elizabethton Water Department needs to invest in an automatic phone system whereby its customers may be prepared to know that come Monday morning there will be no water with which to shower, shave and perform any other personal functions that require the need for water. I know that this is an expense which municipalities try to avoid but I contend that there is a RESPONSIBILITY by the Water Department to keep its customers informed of any disruption of service other that to tell them (me) that they (I) need to subscribe to the Elizabethton Star. Am I the only one in Carter County who gets upset when this happens?

I personally think it wouldn't kill them to call people when they are working on a water line or in your case, when the system is being flushed. I have dealt with the women of the water department as well and find them very unprofessional. They like to call you "hun" or "sweetie" every other word. Some people actually read their news online, and don't give a flying flip about the star. While I am on the topic of doing things online, why in the world in 2012 can't you pay your water bill online??? People have jobs, and not everyone wants to drive up to the water department or wait for one of the ladies to finally answer!! Get with the times already, get an Online payment system set up!!

I know what you mean. In this day and age, you would think the Eton Water Dept, as well as most business, would have an online setup for the option to make payments online.
Guessing the Eton Water Dept still uses old typewriters with ribbons, rotary dial telephones, switchboard operators, etc.
Cmon Eton Water Dept, smarten up and take youe heads out of your a--e-.

I know they have an automatic debit system set up as that's how I've paid mine for years now. Comes out of your checking account each month and you don't have to worry about going there or forgetting to send it in.

Today is Thursday, 3/22/12. No water again. Why? "The system is being flushed". When I asked to speak with Theresa Nidifer, Water Dept. Supervisor, once again I was told, "I'm sorry she's unavailable". When I called and asked to speak with her the last time I had no water I was told, "She's out of the office today". Is this woman ever available to speak with customers? I doubt it. I wonder if she actually exists. Since i have to go to Eton tomorrow I think I will stop by to see one of the Eton City Council Members to voice my frustration. I will continue posting to keep everyone updated.

And as far as being unprofessional by calling you hun or sweetie...Elizabethton is a small town where everyone practically knows everyone so what does it matter if that is their way of making customers feel comfortable. I don't mind when they refer to me like that. Get a freaking life and find something more important to complain about!!!

Yes, you can pay your water and electric bills online but you have to pay $1.50 to do it. So I go in personally to pay it. I don't want to pay a fee to pay my bill. I agree with the idea of announcements being made other than in the Star. I'm out of town a lot so I don't subscribe to a hard copy and they only posts headlines on the Star online and I guarantee you the water and trash pick up aren't main headlines!

I suggest they put planned outages such as the flush (which has never affected me) AND changes in the trash pickup schedule (which has affected me) on the monthly bill. That is the one thing that I DO read faithfully each month!

I got caught not having my trash out a day early one holiday and I had tons of trash that needed to get picked up for the obvious reasons plus I was going out of town for several months! I had to make arrangements for someone to come put my trash out the following week and then take the container back to it's place beside the house.

I went in to City Hall to complain about this and was told that changes to the trash schedule are posted in the Star and and also that a handout is left in the hallway in City Hall for customers to pick up. The only problem with these methods is that customers need to be informed and I was NOT made aware of this when I signed up for my water/trash service.

So, it is my opinion, the best way to inform customers of changes is to include the info on the monthly bill. Everyone reads it in detail!

Our water meter busted, and was leaking. I called and called They finally sent a crew out and they dug up the meter and replace it. Very friendly workers. He said he would tell the lady in accounting that they needed to "adjust" our bill. He said when we get our bill take it in and she will adjust it. 2weeks later we got our bill, took it into the water dept. Our normal bill is about $35.00 it was $95.00 because of the broken meter. Well she "adjusted" it alright......she took $20.00 off the bill!! Thanks a LOT for the crappy water service and you crappy "adjustment"

I understand where you are coming from. They could put it on the news and when they put something in the paper is is a real small article you can't find it or look over it. It has happened in town and they say it was in the paper. When I looked for it I passed over it two or three times before I finally saw it. I asked my neighbors if they saw it in the paper and they said no. After my subscription runs out I am not taking it again. To expensive. As much as we pay for water they could send out notices. They do have a garbage pickup list as to when it will be picked up on Holidays there at the water dept. and they also sent one out. But if you don't take the paper or always catch the new then you are Screwed and a lot of people don't do either.

My water bill is high for two people and we have cut back. So is one of my neighbors. I talked to the one over the water dept and told him all they wanted to do is line their pockets. The workers are nice but I told him I wanted to be there when they read my meter. They checked it out and not leaks in my house or out. When I went out with them to read my meter you couldn't even see the numbers because of the meter was so dirty. They had to clean it off. But they didn't do a good job of cleaning it, but it is better than it was. My bill came down about $5.00. Now they are wanting to raise it again. They just raised it. When they took the $10.00 off they raised the bill to make up the difference.

They have to raise the water bills because the Water Utilities Director, Johann Coetzee received an $8,000 raise for getting a demotion! Go to the City Council Meeting tomorrow night at 6:00 at City Hall and ask questions about how they are funding his raise! Ask the City Manager, Jerome Kitchens why in the hell he gave a raise for a demotion when they can't even balance the water budget without raising rates. And why is it every time I pass City Hall the City Manager, who makes around $100,000/year is outside pulling weeds, landscaping and decorating??? That's ridiculous! Demand answers from City Council as to why they let this kind of thing happen. The City Manager obviously needs to concentrate on the real problems at hand rather than worrying about whether or not there's weeds on the sidewalk at City Hall, bike racks downtown and cleaning the Tweetsie Trail. Obviously that's all he knows how to do so why not get his ass outta there and get a REAL City Manager and stop letting Angie Lyons call the shots and make all the decisions! There's more problems there than anyone knows and it's all because Kitchens can't handle the job. He has to rely on someone else to tell him what to do. Coetzee, Kitchens and Lyons ALL NEED TO GO!!!!!! They are killing the city!
