Many of the so-called member only clubs have numerous behind the scene happenings. Many say they help the community 'maybe it’s true or maybe not.'
In my experience, dealing with the Moose & Elks Clubs there is a great deal that goes unsaid to non-members.
I have noticed at both clubs in Elizabethton, Erwin, Johnson City and in areas that a good old buddy system runs rampant. The atmosphere generally consists of: lots of drinking, smoking, gossip, pickled eggs, popcorn, closed door gambling, draw down, pull tickets, not to mention many times money not being accounted for etc, etc, etc.
Many of the good old buddies are leaders in the community that thrive off the stupidity of other members. Sad but true, the laws are broken many times in the name of benevolence and brother/sisterly love.
I am not against a few drinks or benevolence however to have a ‘private club’ that carries a facade in the community and behind the doors its generally a den of iniquity—that is not what benevolence is about.
Nuff said.I believe that was what most people were trying to say & you just summed it up.It's not just the Elks,it's also the Moose, where I've been a member for years,& the VFW (a little too redneck for me),and also the JC Country Club.Even though nuff said, let's keep the thread going.

The only beef that I have with the 501(c)(3) Elizabethton Elks Club pertains to the fact that some of their leaders screwed up the Elizabethton Linear Trail (it was originally supposed to run parallel with both the Watauga River and the Doe River) by selling all of that Elks Club land within the flood zone to the Gentry fellow...

I do not know if they currently have illegal gambling at the Elks Club in Elizabethton, but I know from pretty reliable sources that it was at one time a big gambling den...

I am not and have never been a EEC member, but I am pretty certain as to the ID of the previously mentioned bar manager.

Sorry, poker, you seem to be oh for whatever. I'm not on the dart team and you had your chance to put up or shut up and you wussed out.

I REALLY could have used an extra Franklin in my pocket too.

Again. That room you are talking about..........storage.

By the way, excessive use of CAPSLOK looks even more childish than you already are.

Elmer, there is nothing to prevent the city from continuing the trail by purchasing the ROW from Gentry just as they would have from the Elks.

Are you just a drunnken retard, Independent? After the Elizabethton Elks Club Board of Directors sold that parcel of land to Gentry, the entire character of the parcel and city trail project was irreversibly changed...

The wooded area was bulldozed down, burnt, and was left, probably hauled away.

Remember the large portion of the Elizabethton Elks Club property that had the shady and sandy beach area (the sand deposited over the ages by the Watauga and Doe Rivers spilling flood waters depositing sand many yards - perhaps as many as 30 yards back from the river bank)- forever gone in most of our lifetimes, anyway.

Gentry was somehow able to get both the City of Elizabethton and the Tennessee Valley Authority to permit him to dump anywhere between 50 and 100 truck loads of fill in the flood zone areas adjacent to the Elizabethton Elks Clubs where all of that Gentry construction of new dwellings went into place...

And did I mention that the Elizabethton Elks Club is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt entity - all the EEC property is supposed to maintained for tax exempt purposes, so even the sale of the ECC land is kinda stinky by the Internal Revenue Code.

And I seem to recall that the Elks Club BofD sold the property to Gentry for a recorded value of approximately $14,000...

The Elizabethton City Council at the time could have exercised the right of eminent domain to secure and then pay a fair market value for the Elk Club property, but these city employees failed to do so.

Sounds to me like someone in city hall was on the take to remove the Elks Club property out from the original Elizabethton Linear Trail greenway plan.

The BPOE is not tax exempt. They pay taxes. Are you accusing the City Hall as being on the take? Not on this matter. And why does it matter to you? You are not a member. I would keep my mouth shut.

Elmer:

According to the Tax assessors office, the Elizabethton Elks Lodge has a total combined tax bill of $4,712.84 which is due and payable.
Yes, they PAY TAXES.

Flood plains may be filled in but not flood ways. the Flood way at the location of the apartments is less than 10 feet wide.

As for what Mr Gentry filled in on the deed when he recorded it, that has nothing to do with the Elks. Either the purchaser or the attorney handling the closing is responsible for that.

Mr. Gentry's tax bill is almost $9600 annually. this is a LOT more than the city would recieve from the unimproved property when it was a forested bramble patch.

Even with the enhanced value of the property, The city could exercise eminent domain and, because of increased Tax revenues and lowered costs of building the trail, come out ahead in the long run.

Remember that fill you mentioned? It's fill that the city would have had to install before paving the trail.

Sorry Elmer, you could have made a quick trip to the courthouse and learned this yourself and not look like a errrrrrrrrrrrm what was your term?'drunken retard'
