I would like to know how the candidates running for Commissioner and the office of Mayor feel about the sale of wine and spirits in Carter County? Just think of how much of our tax dollars are going to Washington and Sullivan Counties. Not having a liquor store in Carter County does not stop people from drinking. It only loses Carter County tax revenue.

agreed. It isnt a coincidence that, for the last 40 years, the most profitable liquor stores in Johnson city have always been located where they are most easily accessed from Carter County

It doesn't stop people from drinking, but it absolutely lessens the likelihood of drinking related problems. If it didn't, no one would be clamoring for a local liquor store so they wouldn't have to drive all the way to Johnson City to get it. Wouldn't bother me if we had even stricter laws in effect. Part of the reason I like living here. Less drunks on the roads.

If you want to drink bad enough it wouldn't matter if the liquor store was 100 miles away. you'd just bulk buy and forget about it. Most people who drink would rather pay $25 for a ffth or half gallon to drink at home but since we can't do that we'll just go to Lonestar or Applebee's and spend that much or more on mixed drinks and THEN we'll get in ur ars and drive home... yeah it makes more sense to keep the liquor stores out of the area.

we gotta give the boys of the CCSD something to do.

That would make you an alcoholic. So, that is an even better argument that we don't need a local liquor store.

Easy....gladly pay higher taxes than to welcome liquor stores here.

What about people that cannot afford higher taxes? You are not talking about over two stores, maybe one. It is only 6 miles away. There is more Carter County cars at One Stop than any other county. They are getting the taxes and will put money in the election to keep stores out of Elizabethton. It will not cause more drinking.

I for one know of SEVERAL families who barely make it as is.A higher property tax would quite literally put them on the street.

And in case you don't know a drunkard will drink ANYTHING that has alcohol in it.. Not just liquor. And last I saw you can get beer in every town in Carter County. So for those that are using drinking issues as an excuse... you might want to rethink your argument

Dont worry about 1 stop going out of business if we get a liquor store in carter county. All the preachers that like a little nip every now and then will still shop there because they wouldnt want their cars seen at the one here.

If I thought there was a chance to open a wine and spirits store in Elizabethton or Carter County I would be the first in line to apply for the license. I know there are debates as to the good and bad but the fact is that it would keep lots of $$$$$ in the city or county. Why give it to the other cities and counties. Who do I need to talk to about opening a store up anyway? By the way, does anyone have a building in a good location I could buy or lease for this purpose?

Open one in Wash county, that way all the preachers in Carter county will still shop there.

I have thought about it as well. You will have stiff opposition. Sammons and his bible thumping cohorts will tie it up in courts as long as they can and try to money you to death. That IS their strategy because they do not have the votes to vote it out. They already tried to change the church distance law( for lack of a better description). Bridges had been in business for a while when they applied for their license, then Sammons and his henchmen tried to change the law so that bridges was too close to whatever church is behind it. They couldnt deny the license so they tried to go around it. Ever notice that our Applebees is kinda small compared to some? City council again altered the law so that the restaurant could seat a lower number of people. I believe that law has changed since then. But all those who want good change, Pay attention to your candidates at this next election. Only way to beat them at their game is to get the right people in there and end this stranglehold that these people have had on this place. Anyone can attend a council meeting. I would suggest doing so to see these people in action.

I vote for the liquor store. I have felt this way for many years and jumped for joy when we finallly got liquor by the drink. The presence of the store only help our our local economy. More drunk drivers? More money for the county. More money for the county, better equipment, better coverage from the police. Let's let our county prosper.

I think the Sammons and his cohorts would be very surprised to try and money me to death. Bottom line is they would loose. I am still looking for a place to build or lease. Also doing a little marketing research. You know what people like and dislike. We'll see

DWB at railroad crssing there are a couple of store fronts for lease good location ample parking and central to much of carter county, allthough I would support a store that would sell spirits and wine my concern would be for the poor people that generate their income from the moonshine trade that is so prevalent in the county do to the fact that there is nowhere to shop legally locally. oh well just something to think about, anyway good luck DWB.
