There were 21 total incidents from 1989 through 2007 involving 50 caliber rifles used for criminal purposes. With these, were three out of the 21 in which the 50 cal was actualy fired at persons during the commision of a crime. There was one instance where it was mounted to a homemade armored vehicle as a threat to be used during a crime. There was one instance where its use with incindiary ammo caused a forest fire. In the fire incident, the perpetrator was firing into a tree stump in a wooded area. At best, the 50 cal seems Impractical, cumbersome, inconvenient, and in some cases cost prohibitive for the majority of criminal activities involving a gun. Measuring 5 feet long or more in length and up to 40 pounds, it certainly does not match the description of a weapon of convenience or concealability. A rifle of this type may cost more than $10,000 and ammunition can cost three to 10 dollars per shot. Keep in mind that proper use of this rifle to achieve its best accuracy and performance requires skills and experience that may go beyond the pail of the average shooter, let alone an unfocused and disturbed subject. For civilian use the 50 cal is well suited for punching holes in target paper and doing so at long range. Some who would be bored to tears in this pursuit may ask: What's so great about that? Or, If you don't use it to hunt with, why would you need it? I don't cut on your hobby of building model airplanes, do I? In fact shooting targets and competitive marksmanship have been a well accepted and challenging sport for a long time, even represented in olympic contests and national tournaments . The 50 cal adds another dimension to this complex sport. Just because one person doesn't like or appreciate it, doesn't mean that it becomes invalid. We are a world based on ratings and popularity. The more popularity the more interest; the more interest the more support; the more support the more money and resources avalible to strengthen the cause. The sport of 50 cal shooting and competitive shooting may be a smaller segment appreciated by fewer numbers, but it is a challenging dimension of a complex sport that is worthy of greater interest and more importantly, realistic understanding.
