NY/NJ Baykeeper is a nonprofit with the goal of protecting, preserving, and restoring the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. For a long time, we have realized the flaws of New Jersey's sewage system. In many older areas, such as Newark, there are Combined Sewer Systems which, during storms, release untreated sewage waters into natural water sources.
In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, we realize it is important for local communities impacted by Combined Sewer Systems to have a knowledge base about what is occurring and what they can do to prevent pollution of their natural water sources. We have created two documents, one explaining Combined Sewer Overflows and the harmful effects, and the other explaining Green Infrastructure, our proposed immediate solution to Combined Sewer Overflows. Below are the links to these documents. Take a look so you can be an informed citizen!
