Saw this in on the news this morning with my 13yr old son. Parents of this boy saying it was not deserving for their child to be shot dead, that he is a good boy.My sons comments were "mom it was 1:00 am".
So yeah, if he was such a good boy why on earth did these parents let him stay out so late. He's 13!! he shouldn't have been out on the streets, where were his parents to make sure he was inside safe?

My condolences either way. He didn't deserve to have neglected guidance.

Why was this kid out on the street at 12:45 AM? What kind of parent (or lack of) lets their 13 year-old out at this time? It's about time that parents begin to take responsibility for their children.

First and foremost, condolances to the family. As a mother myself, I would be devastated if anything happened to my child.

But thruthfully, if the police were taking "proper action", then the cries of racism and police brutality would be all over the evening news. The fact of the matter is, if you live in the port, you should not let your 13 year old KID out til 1am. There was a time I lived in the port (I was over 21 years old) and I wouldn't be riding or walking around at 1 am because I was well aware what kind of area I lived in. It's just not safe, especially for a KID!!
I am saddened to hear about the murder of any child, anywhere....but parents nowadays have no common sense.

Turns out the shooter was wearing a hood and the 13 year old kid was black. Why in my mind did I suspect that? The guy wearing the hood was obviously looking for his victim. This was no random act. This is one of the biggest reasons that whites want nothing to do with blacks. The never ending violence and mindless acts. Who wants to know or associate with anything to do with that. If these were Eskimpos doing this peole would avoid Eskimos. The black community has to get a grip. Now because of something absurd a 13 year old boy lies in his grave. His mother is all but destroyed, his loved ones are in agony. Over what? Wanting to be a gangster? At 13 youre no more then a little boy, no matter what you think. These children are toally out of control. What they need is stick around the fort fathers to help the mothers raise these fools. They need a father who loves his kids so much he will put one kid through a wall and another through college. Theres your answer.

why is everyone blaming the police, when are parents going to take responsibility for thier own kids. The cops are there to protect & serve but if his own parents weren't protecting him by letting him out at that hour what can the cops do? Cops can't be parents, they can't be everywhere all the time. Blame the parents. Once parents start taking acountability you won't see this kind of thing as often. Always looking to blame someone other than themselves. the guilt!

The bottom line is that child or any child for that matter should not have been outside 1:00 am in the morning. Also, it is not all the time the officers in Elizabeth are busy. It is mighty funning if you went to LOOKERS on a certain day of the week you will see the entire police squad there. You could say ask where is the parent but I live in Elizabeth and have a teenage boy who thinks he knows better than me. When I am working he thinks I don’t know he has been outside. These kids have no type of positive reinforcement in their lives and most are coming from single parent homes with the mothers’ holding down a full time job and sometimes 2 or 3 on the side. We are talking about a city that is divided by race as well as class especially when it comes to Elizabeth finest, Politicians and the Board of Education. When you do call the police they half respond to certain sectors especially in Oakwood Plaza were the drug dealers have taken over a 6 building complex. There is has been 2 murders and countless shootings and instead of the city and property owners increasing security they took it away. Just a reminder the owner gets 5+ million a year of taxpayer dollars and don’t pay taxes on the property. The city and local government are aware but all they do is pass the buck, until it is election time the want to play on your hopelessness. I can’t even see how some of this places pass inspection and yet there rich owners is living the high life. I guess that what happens when you are large campaign contributor. If you can’t let me bend the law a little I will just find another low life to run against you. There is no money to be made in a town like Mayberry. They can careless about that child. If you reading this I hope you feel like the low life you are.

Condolences to the parents of the children.

Tuffy, You have alot to learn about urban areas, Have you ever heard of "gang initiations"? This is when a potential gang member must commit a crime/murder in order gain entrance into a gang. This is very likely in this case. Therefore, your claim the "This was no random act" just lost some credibility.

Also, Elijah was a student of mine. He was very respectful, helpful in class, and he was not a troublemaker. Some of his classmates that are troublemakers say the same thing about him.

Some of his friends told me (& I agree with them) that his only mistake was being out late in a dangerous part of town. Remember, most 13 year old boys, regardless of race, aren't the best decision makers. So before you think about character assassination you need to get more facts.

even more so...in your neighborhood things are that bad then perhaps no one should be out at that time let alone a 13 yr old.

I doesn't matter whether there was no school the following day. No 13 year old child of mine would be out at 11:00p, Monday - Friday, unless I was with them. Remember the times when you had to be in the house when the street lights come on! We should all realize that where ever you live, no matter what color you are, there are bad people out there. Keep your precious children close to you. They are our future. I am a 51 year old woman and I don't feel comfortable being out by myself, pass dark in the Port.

God Bless the family, I'm sure the parents are devestated.

It's very unfortuante that we live in a society of fear. Our children should be obedient to our directives but we should also try to be stronger and more involved for them to improve their surroundings and not have them worry about the simple saying" being in the wrong palce at the wrong time" Any time a child is in a community no matter where and when they should feel protected.

Why cant any child be free to be outside at any given time?

We should not live in fear, if it wasnt a child it could have been an adult?

Where is the love? Who are the shooter's parents?

Why is it that we can be so comfortable to kill anyone?

Where are the fathers?

That was painful to me. He was like mah little brother. When my girlfriend told me about what happened, I died. We stayed on the phone everyday and fell asleep crying. She was closer to him than anyone. That was her twin and she wants him back. He was family to me. And justice needs to be served before someone else gets hurt.

Some born crip
Some born blood
luckily i was born with none.
i got out that lifestyle
to do greater things in life
but now that i am
i wish that i would have stayed
to see you grow up
and to do greater things
life is had without you now
i don't know what i can do
i think about you everyday
wishin i was still with you
wishin that i never left
13 years young
and they may brother away
